Chapter 19 - RUBY'S LETTER

Ruby waited three months.

Then one rainy Sunday, she brought me the envelope.

"Now."

We sat on the floor of Isabella's Blue Room.

Ruby opened it herself.

My sweet girl,

Your body belongs to you.

No adult gets to hurt you and call it love.

No adult gets to make you prove you are brave by ignoring pain.

Ask for help loudly.

Ask twice if the first person does not listen.

And if someone tells you your pain is inconvenient, tell them your mother said they can be inconvenienced.

Ruby laughed at that line.

So did I.

Then she kept reading.

Your father loves you more than he understands. Sometimes people who protect big things forget that small voices need protection too. Remind him.

Ruby looked at me.

"Mom knew you."

"Yeah."

"A lot."

"Too much."

She smiled.

The criminal cases moved slowly.

Lucinda pleaded guilty to multiple counts and received a long prison sentence.

Raymond went to trial and was convicted.

Daniel lost his law license.

Paul testified and avoided prison but paid restitution.

Marco returned to work only after an independent security review and under a new rule: nobody hid threats from me to protect my feelings.

He accepted the demotion without complaint.

Bellandi Logistics paid fines and restitution.

We closed the medical foundation contracts.

Ruby's trust moved permanently to independent management.

I could not vote her shares.

Neither could any future spouse.

That made me feel safer, not weaker.

On the anniversary of the ballroom incident, Ruby finished physical therapy.

Elaine handed her the old brace.

"Want to keep it?"

Ruby looked at me.

Then shook her head.

"No."

But on the way out, she changed her mind.

"Wait."

May you like

She took the brace back.

"I know what I want to do with it."
