Chapter 10 - THE STAIRS

Ruby had fallen at school six weeks earlier.
The camera nearest the stairwell had been offline.
At least, that was what the school told us.
Marco requested the maintenance records.
The camera had not failed.
It had been manually disconnected for eleven minutes.
A visitor badge was issued that morning to Lucinda Vale.
She had told me she was at a charity luncheon.
Ruby remembered more once Elaine and a child interviewer helped her feel safe.
"She said Daddy was too busy."
"Then what happened?"
"She told me to walk fast."
"On the stairs?"
Ruby nodded.
"I said my shoe hurt. She pulled my hand."
"Did she push you?"
Ruby looked confused.
"She let go."
That was enough.
A six-year-old did not need the legal vocabulary for betrayal.
School footage from another hallway showed Lucinda leaving the stairwell seconds after Ruby fell.
She never appeared in the official incident report.
The principal admitted a Bellandi donor representative had pressured him to keep her name out.
The representative was Paul Renner.
Paul looked destroyed when confronted.
"I thought it was an accident."
"You hid it anyway."
"Raymond said publicity would hurt the school."
I understood the pattern now.
Everyone did one small wrong thing.
A missing name.
A fake signature.
A quiet payment.
A camera disconnected for eleven minutes.
Then a child ended up on the floor.
Police upgraded the case against Lucinda.
But before they could pick her up, she vanished.
Her ankle monitor lay on the kitchen counter of her apartment.
Beside it was a photograph of Ruby.
