Chapter 17 - LUCINDA'S CONFESSION

Lucinda confessed to taking medication from Raymond's clinic.
She was nineteen.
Isabella had threatened to expose the foundation.
Lucinda wanted to scare her.
"I thought she'd get dizzy," Lucinda said in the recorded interview. "I didn't think she would die."
I stopped the video.
There are sentences that do not deserve a response.
The prosecutor continued without me.
Lucinda admitted entering Isabella's room during a charity gala and switching part of her medication.
Raymond discovered it afterward.
Instead of reporting his daughter, he used Isabella's death to tighten the cover-up.
Then he spent years teaching Lucinda that survival meant getting closer to me.
Marry Salvatore.
Control the trust.
Erase the past.
She was manipulated.
She was also responsible.
Both things could be true.
Ruby did not hear the confession.
She knew only that Lucinda would not return.
"Is she going to jail?"
"Yes."
"Because she took my brace?"
"Because of many things."
Ruby leaned against me.
"Good."
No forgiveness speech.
No lesson about kindness.
A six-year-old was allowed to be glad the person who hurt her could not come back.
Raymond was indicted on fraud, conspiracy, bribery, medical-record manipulation, and obstruction.
Lucinda faced charges tied to Isabella's death, Ruby's abuse, attempted custodial interference, and fraud.
Daniel took a plea for his role in the document scheme.
Paul cooperated and lost his board seat.
Marco testified voluntarily.
Then Elaine called me.
"Ruby's new scans are in."
I braced myself.
"How bad?"
She smiled.
"Better."
The damage Lucinda worsened was not permanent.
Ruby would heal.
Then Elaine added, "But there's something else you should see."
She turned the screen.
May you like
Ruby's original injury had a detail everyone missed.
A fracture pattern inconsistent with a simple fall.
