Chapter 14 - THE ALLIANCE NOBODY EXPECTEDVanessa Sterling had never imagined she would stand beside Naomi Reyes.

Not even in her worst nightmare.

For weeks, she had viewed Naomi as a threat.

A woman who took attention without asking.

A woman Ethan respected.

A woman Vanessa could not intimidate.

But now everything had changed.

Because Vanessa finally understood something.

Naomi had never been fighting her.

She had been fighting something much bigger.

And Vanessa had spent all her energy attacking the wrong person.

The evidence was undeniable.

Someone inside Whitmore Development had been secretly moving money.

Millions of dollars.

Money connected to Victor Kane.

Ethan gathered everyone in the private conference room.

Family members.

Executives.

Security personnel.

And Naomi.

The atmosphere was tense.

“We need to understand who had access.”

Ethan placed documents on the table.

Everyone looked uncomfortable.

Naomi studied each person.

The way they reacted.

The way they avoided eye contact.

The way fear appeared before words.

Then she noticed something.

A small detail.

A mistake.

A person who was pretending too hard.

Vanessa watched Naomi work.

For the first time, she saw her differently.

Not as a maid.

Not as competition.

As someone who was carrying a responsibility nobody else understood.

“You really do this naturally, don’t you?”

Vanessa asked quietly.

Naomi looked at her.

“Do what?”

“Read people.”

Naomi looked away.

“I used to.”

Vanessa was silent.

Then she said something she never thought she would say.

“I was wrong about you.”

Naomi looked surprised.

Vanessa Sterling admitting a mistake was almost impossible.

“I know.”

Vanessa frowned.

“That’s all?”

Naomi almost smiled.

“What did you expect?”

“I don’t know.”

For the first time, Vanessa sounded honest.

And that honesty made Naomi uncomfortable.

Because anger was easier to deal with.

That night, Naomi discovered another clue.

A hidden message inside the financial files.

A code.

Something only someone from the old security world would recognize.

She studied it carefully.

Then her face changed.

“It’s not about money.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“Victor isn’t trying to steal from Whitmore Development.”

“Then what is he doing?”

Naomi looked at the files.

“He’s looking for something.”

“What?”

She pointed at a section of the documents.

“An old project.”

Ethan frowned.

“That project was canceled years ago.”

“Someone wants what was inside it.”

“What was inside?”

Naomi hesitated.

Then answered:

“Information.”

Before they could continue, every phone in the room received the same message.

Unknown sender.

One sentence.

YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

Everyone stared.

Because the picture showed Victor Kane.

Standing beside someone.

Someone they all recognized.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Ethan stepped backward.

Naomi felt her blood run cold.

Because the person beside Victor was the last person she expected.

Margaret Hale.

Her former mentor.

The woman who taught her everything.

The woman who told her to trust no one.

Naomi whispered:

“No…”

The phone received one final message.

YOUR TEACHER HAS ALWAYS KNOWN THE TRUTH.

And for the first time in years…

Naomi Reyes didn’t know who to believe.
