Chapter 7 - THE MOMENT EVERYONE FINALLY SAW NAOMI REYESVanessa Sterling had spent her entire life mastering one skill.

Making people believe exactly what she wanted them to believe.
That night inside Whitmore House, she believed she was about to do it again.
The ballroom was alive.
Music filled the air.
Crystal glasses reflected the golden lights hanging from the ceiling.
Three hundred guests moved around the room, laughing, networking, and celebrating what they believed was the beginning of a perfect love story.
Vanessa stood at the center of it all.
She was surrounded by people who admired her.
People who envied her.
People who wanted to be close to the Whitmore name.
And for years, that had been enough.
But tonight, one thing bothered her.
Naomi Reyes.
The maid in the gray uniform.
The woman who refused to feel small.
The woman who looked calm in a room designed to make ordinary people feel invisible.
Vanessa watched Naomi move through the ballroom.
She carried a tray of drinks.
She helped an elderly guest find his seat.
She quietly fixed a problem with the decorations before anyone noticed.
No attention.
No drama.
No need for approval.
And somehow, that made her more noticeable.
Vanessa hated it.
Because Naomi had something Vanessa had spent years trying to create.
Respect.
Real respect.
Not the kind purchased with money.
Not the kind forced by reputation.
The kind people gave willingly.
And Vanessa wanted to destroy it.
“Naomi.”
Vanessa called her name.
The maid stopped immediately.
“Yes, Ms. Sterling?”
Several guests nearby turned.
Vanessa smiled.
“Could you come here for a moment?”
Naomi walked toward her.
She already knew something was wrong.
Not because Vanessa’s expression changed.
Because Vanessa’s eyes did.
They were the eyes of someone preparing a performance.
“What do you need?”
Vanessa looked around.
“I just wanted to ask you something.”
“Okay.”
“Do you enjoy pretending?”
The question surprised several people nearby.
Naomi remained calm.
“Pretending what?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“That you belong in places like this.”
The conversation around them slowly faded.
People started noticing.
Naomi looked at Vanessa.
“I’m working.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You walk around this house like you’re part of the family.”
“I don’t.”
“You talk to Ethan.”
Naomi’s expression changed slightly.
Only for a second.
But Vanessa noticed.
“There.”
“What?”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Naomi placed the tray down.
“Ms. Sterling, if you have a problem with me, say it directly.”
The words were polite.
But they carried strength.
Several guests looked surprised.
Because nobody spoke to Vanessa that way.
Vanessa smiled.
“Directly?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.”
She lowered her voice.
“You need to remember what you are.”
The ballroom became colder.
Naomi stared at her.
“And what is that?”
Vanessa looked at the gray uniform.
“A servant.”
A few people looked uncomfortable.
Ethan, standing across the room, noticed.
His expression immediately changed.
“Vanessa.”
But she ignored him.
“I think someone needs to remind you that wearing a uniform doesn’t make you part of this world.”
Naomi said nothing.
That silence drove Vanessa crazy.
“Are you not going to defend yourself?”
Naomi looked at her.
“No.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Why?”
“Because people who know their worth don’t need to prove it to people who don’t.”
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
For one moment, she felt something she hated.
Embarrassment.
And embarrassment was dangerous for someone like Vanessa.
Because when Vanessa felt powerless…
She became cruel.
Later that evening, Vanessa watched Naomi speaking with one of the older Whitmore family members.
The elderly man was smiling.
Actually smiling.
Vanessa couldn’t understand it.
Why did everyone trust her?
Why did everyone treat her like she mattered?
A housekeeper.
A nobody.
Someone who had no business standing near people like them.
Vanessa walked toward the service area.
Naomi was organizing empty glasses.
“You embarrassed me.”
Naomi turned.
“I did not.”
“You challenged me in front of guests.”
“No.”
Naomi looked at her.
“You spoke to me in front of guests.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You think you’re clever.”
“No.”
“Then what are you?”
Naomi paused.
The answer came naturally.
“Someone doing her job.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You know what your problem is?”
Naomi waited.
“You’ve forgotten your place.”
That sentence hung between them.
And for a moment, Naomi remembered Margaret’s voice.
Real power doesn’t need to introduce itself.
She breathed slowly.
She controlled the instinct rising inside her.
“I know exactly where I am.”
Then she walked away.
Vanessa watched her leave.
And something inside her snapped.
Because she realized something terrifying.
Naomi Reyes was not afraid of losing anything.
An hour later, the engagement party reached its peak.
The music became louder.
The cameras moved closer.
Vanessa stood beside Ethan.
Everyone expected them to look happy.
But Ethan looked distracted.
His eyes kept moving around the room.
Searching.
Looking for someone.
Vanessa noticed.
And she knew exactly who he was looking for.
Her anger returned.
She walked toward Naomi.
“Come with me.”
Naomi frowned.
“Why?”
“I said come with me.”
The tone was different.
Not a request.
A command.
Naomi followed because she wanted to avoid creating a scene.
That was her mistake.
Because Vanessa had already decided.
Tonight would end with Naomi humiliated.
May you like
But Vanessa didn’t understand one thing.
Naomi Reyes had spent eight years learning how to survive people who were much more dangerous than her.
