Chapter 8 - THE KICK THAT CHANGED EVERYTHINGThe ballroom lights reflected across the marble floor.

Music continued playing.

Guests continued laughing.

Nobody knew they were seconds away from witnessing something they would never forget.

Vanessa stood near the center of the room.

Naomi stood a few feet away.

Between them was everything they represented.

Vanessa.

Money.

Status.

Power.

Image.

Naomi.

Discipline.

Control.

Strength.

“You really think you’re untouchable, don’t you?”

Vanessa asked.

Naomi looked confused.

“No.”

“Then why do you keep acting like you’re above me?”

“I don’t.”

“You always have that look.”

“What look?”

“Like you know something everyone else doesn’t.”

Naomi stayed silent.

Because Vanessa was right.

Naomi did know things.

She knew how people moved when they lied.

She knew how people acted when they were afraid.

She knew when someone was about to lose control.

And Vanessa was losing control.

“Vanessa.”

Ethan’s voice came from behind them.

He had followed.

“Enough.”

Vanessa turned.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

“It has everything to do with me.”

“No.”

She pointed toward Naomi.

“It has to do with her.”

The guests began noticing.

The room became quieter.

Naomi looked at Ethan.

“It’s okay.”

But Ethan shook his head.

“No, it’s not.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Of course you defend her.”

That sentence hurt.

Not because it was true.

Because Vanessa believed it was.

She looked at Naomi.

“You’ve been waiting for this, haven’t you?”

Naomi frowned.

“For what?”

“To make people think you’re better.”

“I never wanted that.”

“Stop lying!”

The shout echoed.

Several guests turned.

Vanessa realized people were watching.

And instead of calming down…

She performed.

She stepped closer.

“You know what people like you do?”

Naomi’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“What?”

“You pretend to be humble.”

Vanessa smiled.

“But secretly, you love being around people with money.”

Naomi shook her head.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“And you think that makes you mysterious?”

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re just a maid.”

The insult landed.

But Naomi didn’t react.

And that made Vanessa even angrier.

“Say something!”

Naomi looked at her.

“What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to admit you don’t belong here.”

Silence.

Then Naomi answered.

“I belong wherever I earn my place.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

The guests heard it.

Ethan heard it.

Everyone heard it.

And Vanessa felt the room slipping away from her.

So she did something reckless.

Something she would regret forever.

She stepped forward.

And she kicked.

The movement was sudden.

Unexpected.

Her expensive heel moved toward Naomi’s leg.

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Several people covered their mouths.

Everyone expected Naomi to fall.

Everyone expected the maid to finally break.

But Naomi did not fall.

Not even close.

Her body moved before her mind finished thinking.

Years of training returned.

The same training that had protected CEOs.

The same training that had saved witnesses.

The same training she promised herself she would never use again.

Her hand moved.

Fast.

Controlled.

Precise.

She caught Vanessa’s ankle.

The entire ballroom froze.

The music continued for another two seconds before someone finally turned it off.

Three hundred people stared.

Vanessa stood frozen on one heel.

Her face changed from anger…

To confusion.

To fear.

Because she finally understood.

The maid had not been weak.

The maid had been holding back.

Naomi looked into her eyes.

Not with hatred.

Not with revenge.

With disappointment.

“Please don’t make me finish this.”

Vanessa stared.

“What… are you?”

Naomi slowly released her ankle.

And before she could answer…

A man near the back of the ballroom whispered:

“I know her.”

Everyone turned.

The man stepped forward.

His face had lost all color.

“She’s not a maid.”

Naomi looked at him.

And for the first time that night…

Her calm expression disappeared.

Because she knew exactly who he was.

A person from her past.

A person who could expose everything.

The man swallowed.

“She was the best protection specialist in the country.”

The ballroom went silent.

And Vanessa Sterling finally realized…

May you like

She had not humiliated a maid.

She had challenged a woman trained to stop men twice her size.
