Chapter 9 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE GRAY UNIFORMFor several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.
The ballroom of Whitmore House, a place that had hosted politicians, billionaires, and some of the most powerful people in Boston, had become completely silent.
All eyes were on Naomi Reyes.
The woman everyone thought they understood.
The quiet housekeeper.
The employee who carried breakfast trays.
The woman who disappeared into the background.
But now everyone was looking at her differently.
Because the truth had finally stepped into the light.
“She was the best protection specialist in the country.”
The words were still hanging in the air.
Vanessa Sterling stared at Naomi as if she was seeing her for the first time.
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s impossible.”
The man who had spoken looked at Naomi carefully.
His name was Daniel Cross.
A former security consultant who had worked with some of the same agencies Naomi had.
He had seen her before.
Not in a mansion.
Not wearing a gray uniform.
On dangerous assignments.
“You don’t recognize me, do you?”
Naomi’s expression remained controlled.
“I do.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then you know I’m telling the truth.”
Ethan looked between them.
“Naomi?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation told Ethan everything.
Because Naomi was never speechless.
Not once.
Not during emergencies.
Not during arguments.
Not even when Vanessa attacked her.
But now…
Now she was quiet.
“Who are you?”
Ethan asked softly.
The question hurt more than Naomi expected.
Because she had never wanted this moment.
She had never wanted anyone to look at her like she was a mystery.
Like she was something dangerous.
She wanted to be Naomi.
Just Naomi.
Not the person she used to be.
“I was a security specialist.”
Her voice was calm.
“That’s all.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“That’s all?”
Everyone looked at him.
He shook his head.
“No offense, Naomi, but that’s like saying a fighter pilot was just someone who drove a plane.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“So she lied.”
The accusation immediately changed the atmosphere.
Naomi looked at her.
“I didn’t lie.”
“You let everyone believe you were just a maid.”
“I never said I was only a maid.”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because Naomi was right.
She had never pretended.
She had simply chosen silence.
And somehow, that made Vanessa even angrier.
“You manipulated everyone.”
“No.”
Naomi’s voice became slightly firmer.
“You wanted to see what you wanted to see.”
That answer hit harder than Vanessa expected.
Because deep down, she knew it was true.
She had looked at Naomi’s uniform.
Her job.
Her position.
And decided she already knew her value.
Ethan walked away from the crowd.
He needed air.
He needed answers.
Naomi followed him outside onto the terrace.
The cold December air surrounded them.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally Ethan turned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Naomi looked down.
“Because it didn’t matter.”
“It matters.”
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“That life is over.”
Ethan studied her.
“Is it?”
Naomi looked away.
And Ethan noticed something.
For the first time since he had known her…
She looked afraid.
Not of Vanessa.
Not of the guests.
Not of the rumors.
Of the past.
“What happened?”
Naomi stayed silent.
Then she said:
“I made a mistake.”
Ethan frowned.
“Everyone makes mistakes.”
“Not like mine.”
The pain in her voice surprised him.
This was not the confident woman who stopped Vanessa.
This was someone carrying something heavy.
Something she had carried alone for years.
Inside the ballroom, Vanessa was surrounded by whispers.
People who had praised her an hour earlier were now talking about Naomi.
Not Vanessa.
That was unbearable.
A woman in a designer dress approached another guest.
“I heard she saved a senator’s family.”
“Someone said she protected witnesses.”
“She stopped an armed attacker once.”
Every sentence made Vanessa feel smaller.
Because suddenly, the person she considered beneath her had become the most interesting person in the room.
And Vanessa could not accept that.
She walked toward Eleanor Sterling.
Her mother watched the situation carefully.
“You were right.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“About what?”
“She’s a problem.”
Vanessa expected comfort.
Instead, Eleanor continued.
“But not for the reason you think.”
Vanessa frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“You thought she wanted Ethan.”
“She doesn’t?”
“No.”
Eleanor looked toward Naomi.
“That’s why you should be worried.”
Vanessa didn’t understand.
“Why?”
“Because a woman who wants something can be controlled.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“But a woman who wants nothing is much harder to defeat.”
Later that night, after most guests left, Naomi returned to her small apartment.
She thought the past was behind her.
She was wrong.
A message appeared on her phone.
Unknown number.
You should have stayed hidden.
Naomi stared at the screen.
Her breathing slowed.
Another message arrived.
We know what happened in Philadelphia.
For a moment, Naomi couldn’t move.
Because only a few people knew about Philadelphia.
Very few.
She looked around the room.
The peaceful life she created suddenly felt fragile.
Then the phone rang.
Margaret.
Naomi answered immediately.
“They found me.”
Margaret didn’t ask who.
She already knew.
“I was afraid this would happen.”
Naomi’s voice became cold.
“Who are they?”
A pause.
Then Margaret said:
“The same people connected to the Philadelphia incident.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
May you like
The past she escaped from…
Had finally caught up.
