Chapter 6 - THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHINGThe Whitmore engagement party was supposed to be Vanessa Sterling’s greatest achievement.

For months, she planned every detail.

Nothing was allowed to be imperfect.

The flowers.

The music.

The guest list.

The lighting.

Everything had to represent one message.

Vanessa Sterling had arrived.

She was becoming part of the Whitmore legacy.

The event took place on the first Saturday of December.

By sunset, Whitmore House looked like a palace.

White roses decorated every entrance.

Hundreds of candles illuminated the ballroom.

Crystal glasses filled with champagne covered every table.

Luxury cars filled the driveway.

The most influential people in Boston walked through the doors.

Investors.

Politicians.

Business owners.

Journalists.

Everyone who mattered was there.

And Vanessa loved every second.

She stood in the center of the ballroom wearing a silver gown that looked like it belonged on a movie star.

She smiled.

She greeted guests.

She accepted compliments.

This was her world.

This was where she was powerful.

Then Naomi walked in.

Not as a guest.

As an employee.

Wearing the same simple gray uniform.

And Vanessa noticed immediately.

Her smile disappeared for half a second.

Because somehow, Naomi still looked confident.

Even surrounded by people wearing millions of dollars worth of jewelry.

Even standing in a room where everyone else belonged to a world of wealth.

Naomi looked comfortable.

That bothered Vanessa.

More than she wanted to admit.

Ethan approached Naomi near the service entrance.

“Everything okay?”

Naomi nodded.

“Yes.”

“You’re sure?”

She smiled.

“I’m just working.”

Ethan looked around the crowded ballroom.

“You know, you don’t have to disappear.”

Naomi looked surprised.

“What?”

“You always stand somewhere nobody notices.”

She smiled faintly.

“That’s usually the point.”

Ethan studied her.

“Why?”

Naomi hesitated.

Because the real answer was complicated.

Because being unnoticed kept people safe.

Including herself.

Before she could answer, Vanessa appeared.

“Ethan.”

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

“There you are.”

Ethan turned.

“I was checking on the staff.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Of course.”

Her eyes moved to Naomi.

“Always so responsible.”

The words sounded like a compliment.

They weren’t.

Naomi recognized it.

As the night continued, Vanessa became more irritated.

Everywhere she looked, Naomi was respected.

The older Whitmore employees thanked her.

The kitchen staff trusted her.

Even guests who barely knew her treated her kindly.

Vanessa hated that.

Because Naomi had no title.

No money.

No family name.

Yet people valued her.

And Vanessa could not understand why.

Near midnight, Vanessa found Naomi near the ballroom entrance.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Naomi looked confused.

“Enjoying what?”

“Everyone looking at you.”

Naomi frowned.

“They’re not.”

“Don’t lie.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You think because Ethan is kind to you, you belong here.”

Naomi stayed silent.

That silence made Vanessa angry.

“Say something.”

Naomi looked at her.

“What would you like me to say?”

“I want you to admit you know exactly what you’re doing.”

“Doing what?”

Vanessa laughed.

“Playing innocent.”

Before Naomi could respond, a group of guests approached.

Cameras turned toward them.

Vanessa noticed.

And an idea formed.

A cruel one.

She smiled.

Because if Naomi wanted attention…

Vanessa would give her attention.

The kind she would never forget.

She stepped forward.

And nobody in the ballroom realized yet…

May you like

That Vanessa Sterling was about to make the biggest mistake of her life.

Because she was about to attack a woman who had spent eight years learning exactly how to stop people twice her size.
