Chapter 3 - THE FIANCÉE WHO SAW A THREAT WHERE THERE WAS NONEVanessa Sterling had spent her entire life learning one important lesson.

Never let anyone forget who you are.

Her mother taught her that before she was old enough to understand what it meant.

“People don’t respect kindness, Vanessa,” her mother used to say while adjusting her daughter’s expensive dresses before charity events.

“They respect position.”

At the time, Vanessa thought it was advice.

Years later, she realized it was a warning.

In her world, everything was measured.

The size of a house.

The brand of a dress.

The people sitting at your dinner table.

The last name attached to yours.

And Vanessa Sterling had built her entire identity around becoming someone impossible to ignore.

She grew up surrounded by luxury.

Private schools.

Exclusive clubs.

Summer vacations where everyone knew her family name before they knew hers.

She learned how to smile for people she disliked.

How to compliment women she secretly envied.

How to make powerful men believe they were in control while quietly guiding every decision.

Vanessa was not careless.

She was intelligent.

Ambitious.

Beautiful.

And she knew exactly how the world worked.

That was why Ethan Whitmore was the perfect choice.

Ethan was not just rich.

He represented everything Vanessa had spent her life chasing.

A respected family.

A powerful company.

A name that opened doors.

Being Ethan Whitmore’s wife would place her exactly where she believed she belonged.

At the top.

The problem was Ethan himself.

Because Ethan did not behave like the men Vanessa grew up around.

He did not care about appearances as much as she did.

He did not judge people by clothing.

He did not treat employees like furniture.

And that bothered Vanessa more than she wanted to admit.

Especially when it came to Naomi Reyes.

At first, Vanessa ignored her.

She considered Naomi nothing more than another employee.

Someone who cleaned rooms.

Someone who carried trays.

Someone who existed in the background.

But then Vanessa started noticing things.

Small things.

Dangerous things.

The kind of details that slowly destroyed her confidence.

One evening, Vanessa entered the kitchen and found Ethan sitting across from Naomi.

They were laughing.

Not a polite laugh.

Not the kind people used at expensive dinners.

A real laugh.

Ethan looked relaxed.

Comfortable.

Happy.

Vanessa stood in the doorway for several seconds without either of them noticing.

That bothered her.

Because Ethan always noticed her.

He always noticed when she entered a room.

He always adjusted his behavior around her.

But with Naomi, he forgot to perform.

“Am I interrupting something?”

Her voice cut through the kitchen.

Ethan looked up.

“Vanessa.”

Naomi immediately stood.

“Good evening, Ms. Sterling.”

Vanessa looked at the empty cup in front of Ethan.

“Tea?”

Ethan nodded.

“Naomi made it.”

Vanessa smiled.

A cold smile.

“How thoughtful.”

Naomi recognized that tone.

She had heard it before.

Not from criminals.

Not from dangerous people.

From people who believed they could hurt others without consequences.

“I was just finishing my shift,” Naomi said.

“Of course.”

Vanessa looked her up and down.

“You must be very busy.”

Naomi said nothing.

Because she knew exactly what Vanessa was doing.

Testing.

Measuring.

Searching for weakness.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You know, Naomi, I think people sometimes forget their place when others are too polite.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.”

But Naomi remained calm.

“I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything.”

The answer was simple.

Respectful.

But it was enough.

Vanessa froze.

Because Naomi had challenged her.

Not loudly.

Not aggressively.

Just enough.

And that was somehow worse.

Most people apologized when Vanessa pushed.

Most people became nervous.

Most people looked away.

Naomi didn’t.

She simply stood there.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Like Vanessa’s opinion meant nothing.

That night, Vanessa made a decision.

She would find out exactly who Naomi Reyes was.

The next morning, Vanessa began watching.

She watched Naomi enter the mansion before sunrise.

She watched her move through the halls.

She watched how employees greeted her.

And something strange happened.

People respected Naomi.

Not because they feared her.

Because they trusted her.

The groundskeeper smiled when Naomi brought him coffee.

The elderly Whitmore family patriarch thanked her personally.

The kitchen staff asked for her opinion.

Vanessa noticed every detail.

And every detail made her more uncomfortable.

Because Naomi had something Vanessa could not buy.

Genuine respect.

Later that afternoon, Vanessa found Naomi organizing the linen room.

“You’re very comfortable here.”

Naomi looked up.

“I’m doing my job.”

Vanessa walked slowly between the shelves.

“Do you know how many people would do anything to work inside this house?”

“No.”

“Hundreds.”

Naomi folded a towel.

“I’m aware this is a good workplace.”

Vanessa smiled.

“But do you know why you’re here?”

Naomi looked at her.

“Because I was hired.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“That’s cute.”

She stepped closer.

“You think this is about qualifications?”

Naomi said nothing.

“This house belongs to people with influence. Connections. History.”

Vanessa touched a stack of towels.

“People like you should understand how lucky they are.”

Naomi’s eyes became slightly colder.

But her voice stayed calm.

“I do.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa waited.

Then Naomi continued.

“I’m lucky to work somewhere I’m treated fairly.”

That answer annoyed Vanessa.

Because Naomi was not defending herself.

She was simply stating the truth.

And Vanessa hated that.

Because truth was harder to attack.

Two weeks before the engagement party, Vanessa’s jealousy became impossible to hide.

She started creating problems.

Small ones at first.

She snapped her fingers whenever she wanted Naomi’s attention.

“Coffee.”

Not please.

Not thank you.

Just a command.

She left clothes on the floor after Naomi cleaned the room.

She returned meals because the arrangement of fruit was “careless.”

She complained about tiny mistakes that did not exist.

But Naomi remained silent.

That silence made Vanessa angry.

She wanted a reaction.

She wanted proof that Naomi was beneath her.

Instead, Naomi gave her nothing.

Then Vanessa found the perfect opportunity.

A diamond earring.

One of her favorites.

She secretly dropped it beneath the bedroom dresser.

Then she waited.

When Naomi arrived to clean the room, Vanessa entered minutes later.

“My earring is missing.”

Naomi looked up.

“I’ll help you find it.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“You will find it.”

Naomi stared at her.

“Of course.”

Ten minutes later, Naomi reached beneath the dresser.

Her fingers touched something cold.

The diamond earring.

She placed it on the table.

Vanessa stared.

For a moment, she had no words.

Then she smiled.

“You should be more careful.”

Naomi looked at her.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

Vanessa picked up the earring.

“Things like this are valuable.”

Naomi stayed quiet.

Then Vanessa noticed something.

Naomi was not embarrassed.

She was not apologizing.

“You don’t sound sorry.”

Naomi looked directly at her.

“I didn’t lose it.”

The room became silent.

It was only one sentence.

Four words.

But to Vanessa, it felt like a slap.

Because for the first time, Naomi had refused to accept blame for something she didn’t do.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You work in this house because Ethan’s family allows it.”

Her voice lowered.

“Don’t confuse being tolerated with belonging.”

Naomi looked down.

Not because she was defeated.

Because she was controlling herself.

The old instincts were waking up.

The instincts that had protected people.

The instincts that had ended fights before they began.

But Naomi remembered her promise.

No violence.

No anger.

No returning to the person she used to be.

Then she answered quietly.

“I never have.”

Vanessa stared at her.

And for the first time, a small feeling appeared inside her.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Fear.

Because she realized something.

Naomi Reyes was not trying to climb higher.

She was not trying to replace her.

She was not interested in Ethan’s wealth.

So why did Ethan trust her?

Why did people respect her?

And what exactly was Naomi hiding?

May you like

Vanessa decided she would find out.

No matter what it took.
