Chapter 1 - THE KICK THAT CHANGED EVERYTHINGThe first thing I felt was not pain.

It was silence.

A terrifying, empty silence inside my stomach.

I was six months pregnant when my sister looked me straight in the eyes…

and kicked me.

Not pushed.

Not accidentally bumped into me.

Kicked.

Her shoe hit my belly with enough force to send me falling backward onto the grass.

For a second, the entire backyard disappeared.

The laughter.

The music.

The relatives gathered around the patio.

The birthday decorations hanging from the trees.

Everything vanished.

There was only me.

My hands wrapped around my stomach.

And my unborn daughter.

“Emma?”

I whispered.

“Please…”

“Move.”

I waited.

One second.

Two seconds.

Ten seconds.

Nothing.

No tiny kick.

No movement.

No sign that my baby was okay.

My heart stopped.

“Rachel!”

My husband’s voice cut through the crowd.

I looked up.

Ethan was running across the yard.

His face had changed.

The moment he saw me on the ground, his expression turned from confusion…

to fear.

“Don’t move.”

He dropped beside me.

“What happened?”

I tried to answer.

But my throat couldn’t form the words.

I looked at my sister.

Lauren.

She stood a few feet away.

Still holding the same angry expression she had seconds earlier.

Then she noticed something.

Our teenage cousin Noah was holding his phone.

Recording.

Lauren’s face changed instantly.

The anger disappeared.

The confidence disappeared.

And suddenly…

she became the victim.

“Oh my God…”

Lauren covered her mouth.

“She fell.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“She came at me!”

Her voice became louder.

“I was defending myself!”

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Rachel, what did you do?”

I looked at him.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“What did I do?”

My mother rushed toward Lauren.

“Are you hurt?”

Lauren shook her head.

“No, Mom.”

Then she looked at me.

“I tried to stop her.”

I felt something inside me break.

Not physically.

Something worse.

My own family was watching me lie on the ground, pregnant with their granddaughter…

and they were protecting the person who hurt me.

Ethan looked around.

His eyes moved from my father.

To my mother.

To Lauren.

Then back to me.

His voice was quiet.

“Rachel.”

“Did she hurt you?”

I nodded.

“She kicked me.”

The entire yard went silent.

Lauren immediately started crying.

Not because she felt guilty.

Because she realized someone had seen the truth.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.”

Noah stepped forward.

His hands were shaking.

But his phone was still raised.

“I recorded everything.”

My father’s face changed.

“What?”

Noah swallowed.

“I recorded the whole thing.”

Lauren turned toward him.

“You need to delete that.”

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Noah, this is family.”

The way she said it made my stomach turn.

Because I knew exactly what she meant.

Family protected family.

Even when family was wrong.

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling 911.”

My father immediately shook his head.

“Ethan, don’t make this bigger than it is.”

Ethan looked at him.

A cold expression crossed his face.

“My pregnant wife was kicked in the stomach.”

A pause.

“That’s already big.”

Lauren stepped closer.

“Ethan, please.”

Her voice became soft.

“You know me.”

“You know I would never hurt her.”

Ethan looked at her.

Then at me.

Then at my hands still wrapped around my belly.

“You’re right.”

Lauren relaxed slightly.

Then Ethan finished:

“I know you.”

“That’s why this is worse.”

The ambulance arrived twelve minutes later.

Those twelve minutes felt like hours.

I kept trying to feel Emma move.

Nothing.

Every second without movement felt like someone was crushing my chest.

The paramedic knelt beside me.

“Rachel, can you tell me where you feel pain?”

“My stomach.”

“Any bleeding?”

“No.”

“Any movement from the baby?”

I looked away.

My silence answered.

The paramedic’s face became serious.

“Okay.”

“We’re taking you in now.”

As they lifted me onto the stretcher, I saw my father walking toward Noah.

His eyes were fixed on the phone.

“Give me that.”

Noah stepped back.

“It’s evidence.”

My father’s voice lowered.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Ethan saw him.

And stepped between them.

“Try taking that phone.”

My father stopped.

Because he knew Ethan wasn’t threatening.

He was warning.

At the hospital, doctors rushed me into the emergency room.

Ethan stayed beside me.

Holding my hand.

“Stay with me.”

I looked at him.

“What if something happened?”

His eyes filled.

“Don’t say that.”

“What if Emma—”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“No.”

A doctor entered.

“We need to run some tests.”

Ethan stood.

“I’m her husband.”

The doctor nodded.

“We’ll update you.”

Then they closed the door.

For the first time since the attack…

I was alone.

And that was when I realized something.

My family didn’t just want to hide what Lauren did.

They were afraid of something.

Something bigger.

Two hours later…

The doctor returned.

His expression was serious.

Ethan immediately stood.

“How is my wife?”

The doctor looked at him.

“She’s stable.”

A breath of relief.

“And the baby?”

The doctor hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me.

“We found something unusual.”

My heart dropped.

“What?”

The doctor looked at the papers.

“The impact itself was dangerous.”

“But the bigger concern is this…”

He looked directly at me.

“Rachel, your medical records show you have been exposed to a medication that can increase the risk of pregnancy complications.”

I froze.

“What medication?”

The doctor looked at Ethan.

“We found traces of it in your blood.”

Silence.

Ethan slowly turned toward me.

“Rachel…”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what that means.”

The doctor continued:

“Someone has been giving you this medication for weeks.”

My blood ran cold.

Weeks.

Not today.

Not the argument.

Not the kick.

Someone had been planning something.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

My sister Lauren.

But she wasn’t crying anymore.

She sounded calm.

“Ethan.”

A pause.

“You need to stop looking for answers.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“Where did you get this number?”

Lauren ignored the question.

“You don’t understand what Rachel is risking.”

My heart froze.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan asked.

Lauren whispered:

“The baby was never supposed to be born.”

The call ended.

Ethan stared at the phone.

I stared at him.

Because suddenly…

May you like

the kick was not the attack.

It was only the beginning.
