Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER WHO CHOSE MONEY OVER BLOODThe voice on the recording belonged to my mother.

I knew it before the detective even confirmed it.

A mother’s voice is something a child recognizes before anything else.

The voice that comforted you when you were sick.

The voice that called your name when you were lost.

The voice that once told you:

“I’ll always protect you.”

Now that same voice was saying:

“Once Rachel and the baby are gone, the trust returns exactly where it belongs.”

I felt like someone had reached inside my chest and pulled something out.

Not because my mother betrayed me.

I think a part of me already knew.

It was because she betrayed my daughter.

A baby who had never hurt anyone.

A baby who had never even opened her eyes.

“No.”

I whispered.

Ethan immediately came beside me.

“Rachel.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

My eyes stayed on the screen.

“Play it again.”

Detective Miller looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

My voice became stronger.

“I need to hear it again.”

The recording played.

My mother’s voice.

Daniel Whitmore’s voice.

The same conversation.

The same betrayal.

Daniel:

“You understand the risk, Diane. If Rachel discovers the truth, everything falls apart.”

My mother:

“She won’t discover anything.”

A pause.

“She’s always trusted me.”

That sentence hurt the most.

Because she was right.

I had trusted her.

My whole life.

Ethan looked away.

His jaw was tight.

I knew he was angry.

But he wasn’t angry for himself.

He was angry because someone had hurt me.

Detective Miller closed the file.

“We need to move quickly.”

“Why?”

Ethan asked.

“Because if they know we have this recording, they’ll know their plan is exposed.”

A pause.

“And people who are willing to harm a pregnant woman usually don’t stop because they’re caught.”

The words made my stomach tighten.

Emma.

My baby girl.

I placed my hand over my belly.

This time…

a tiny movement came.

A small kick.

I froze.

“She moved.”

Ethan immediately looked at me.

“What?”

“She moved.”

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“She’s okay.”

Ethan placed his hand over mine.

For a moment…

everything else disappeared.

The betrayal.

The lies.

The fear.

There was only us.

And our daughter.

Then Detective Miller said something that brought us back.

“There’s something else.”

We looked at him.

“What?”

He opened another document.

“This was recovered from Daniel Whitmore’s office.”

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a handwritten note.

My grandfather’s handwriting.

But this time…

it was real.

I read the words.

And my hands started shaking.

“If anyone tries to change the trust after my death, do not trust my lawyer or my family. The person who protects Rachel and her child is the person who deserves the truth.”

I looked up.

“What does this mean?”

Detective Miller answered:

“Your grandfather knew someone might try to manipulate the trust.”

Ethan looked at the note.

“He expected this.”

“Yes.”

“But there’s more.”

Detective Miller pointed to the bottom of the page.

A name.

A name my grandfather had written.

Ethan Carter.

My husband froze.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“You?”

Detective Miller nodded.

“Your grandfather added a private instruction.”

“He wanted Ethan to receive something if anyone attempted to challenge the trust.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Why would he choose me?”

I answered quietly:

“Because Grandpa trusted you.”

I remembered.

Before he died, my grandfather had taken Ethan aside.

I never knew why.

I thought it was just a conversation between two men.

Now…

I wondered what my grandfather had told him.

“Ethan.”

I whispered.

“What did Grandpa say to you that day?”

He looked uncomfortable.

For a moment, he didn’t answer.

Then he reached into his wallet.

From behind an old photo, he pulled out a folded piece of paper.

My heart stopped.

“You kept this?”

He nodded.

“I didn’t know if I should show you.”

He handed it to me.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was my grandfather’s.

“Ethan, if you are reading this, then I was right to worry.”

My breathing slowed.

I continued.

“Protect Rachel. Protect my great-grandchild. The danger will not come from strangers. It will come from people who believe they are entitled to what belongs to her.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

My grandfather knew.

He knew someone in our family would do this.

The final line made my blood run cold.

“The person you should fear most is not the one who attacks openly.”

“It is the one who cries after causing the damage.”

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew who that described.

Lauren.

Suddenly, Detective Miller’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

His expression changed.

“What do you mean she’s gone?”

Ethan stood.

“Who?”

The detective slowly lowered the phone.

“Your sister.”

My heart dropped.

“Lauren?”

He nodded.

“She was released from questioning ten minutes ago.”

“That’s impossible.”

“She was never officially arrested.”

I stared at him.

“Where is she?”

The detective looked at his phone.

Then showed us the location.

A security camera image.

Lauren standing outside the hospital parking garage.

Talking to someone.

The person beside her was wearing a dark coat.

Their face wasn’t visible.

But I recognized the car.

A black SUV.

The same kind of vehicle that had been following me for weeks.

Then another photo came through.

A closer angle.

The person turned slightly.

And my heart stopped.

Because I knew him.

Daniel Whitmore.

But he wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t hiding.

He was smiling.

And Lauren was handing him a folder.

The same folder my mother had taken from my house.

The inheritance documents.

Ethan looked at me.

“Rachel…”

I already understood.

The attack on me wasn’t the plan.

It was the beginning.

They were still trying to take everything.

And now…

they knew we knew.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

No words.

Only a picture.

A picture of my hospital room.

Taken minutes ago.

While we were sitting there.

Underneath it was a sentence:

“You should have left the trust alone.”

I looked at Ethan.

His face became completely cold.

Because whoever sent that message…

May you like

was not outside the hospital.

They were inside.
