Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO HID THE TRUTHFor several seconds…

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the name my mother had just said didn’t make sense.

My father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who carried me on his shoulders when I was little.

The man who told me every problem could be solved if family stayed together.

That man.

The one who looked me in the eyes after I fell to the grass…

and asked what I had done.

My father was involved?

“No.”

I whispered.

My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Rachel…”

“No.”

My voice became louder.

“You’re wrong.”

Ethan reached for my hand.

But I pulled away.

Not from him.

From the reality I didn’t want to accept.

“My father would never hurt me.”

My mother closed her eyes.

“I know you want to believe that.”

“Because I wanted to believe it too.”

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“Diane.”

“You need to explain everything.”

My mother nodded slowly.

“I will.”

A pause.

“But you need to understand something.”

She looked at me.

“Your father didn’t start this.”

“He helped cover it up.”

The difference somehow hurt more.

“Start from the beginning.”

Ethan said.

My mother took a deep breath.

“The night your grandfather died…”

“Your father was there.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He went to your grandfather’s house.”

“Why?”

My mother looked down.

“Because your grandfather called him.”

“About what?”

“The company.”

“The stolen money.”

“The trust.”

Detective Miller leaned forward.

“What did your grandfather know?”

My mother answered:

“He knew Daniel had been moving money from Caldwell Industries for years.”

“He also knew Jonathan was alive.”

My stomach tightened.

“He knew his son was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he tell anyone?”

My mother looked at me.

“Because Jonathan threatened him.”

A cold silence filled the room.

“He told your grandfather that if he exposed him…”

“He would destroy the family.”

Ethan frowned.

“But why would Rachel’s father help?”

My mother looked away.

“Because Daniel had something on him.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“Money.”

“Money?”

“Your father had business problems years ago.”

“He borrowed money.”

“From Daniel.”

My eyes widened.

“So Daniel controlled him.”

My mother nodded.

“Yes.”

Everything started connecting.

The payments.

The fake documents.

The attack.

The lies.

But one question remained.

“If my father was involved…”

I whispered.

“Why did he let Lauren attack me?”

My mother looked at me.

And her answer hurt the most.

“Because he thought Daniel would spare you.”

I stared.

“He thought?”

My voice broke.

“He risked my baby because he thought?”

My mother cried.

“I’m sorry.”

I turned away.

Because sorry wasn’t enough anymore.

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A police officer stepped inside.

“Detective Miller.”

He walked over quickly.

“We found Ethan Carter’s father.”

My heart stopped.

“My father?”

The officer nodded.

“He’s at the station.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“He turned himself in.”

Everyone looked shocked.

“Turned himself in?”

Ethan asked.

The officer nodded.

“He brought evidence.”

“What evidence?”

The officer handed Detective Miller a small envelope.

“Your father said this belongs to Rachel.”

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside was an old key.

And a note.

My father’s handwriting.

“Rachel, if you are reading this, then I failed you.”

My breathing stopped.

I continued.

“I spent years trying to protect you by staying silent.”

“But silence became another way I hurt you.”

My eyes filled with tears.

The note continued:

“Your grandfather left something behind.”

“Something Daniel and Jonathan are terrified of.”

A pause.

“It is not money.”

“It is the truth.”

I looked at the key.

“The key opens the one place they never searched.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Where?”

I turned the note over.

There was one final line.

“Your childhood home.”

I froze.

My childhood home had been sold years ago.

There was nothing there.

Nothing except memories.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered.

“Hello?”

A man spoke.

An older voice.

Calm.

Cold.

“Rachel Caldwell.”

My blood turned cold.

Nobody called me that anymore.

Not since I got married.

“Who is this?”

The man laughed softly.

“You’re looking for the truth.”

A pause.

“Good.”

“Because your grandfather hid it where nobody would think to look.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Who are you?”

The answer came quietly.

“Someone your family told you was dead.”

The call ended.

Detective Miller looked at the number.

His face changed.

“What?”

Ethan asked.

The detective slowly looked up.

“We traced it.”

My heart pounded.

“Who was it?”

Detective Miller answered:

“The call came from an active phone registered under…”

A pause.

“Jonathan Caldwell.”

The room went silent.

The man my family claimed died twelve years ago…

May you like

had just called me.

And he knew exactly where the truth was hidden.
