Chapter 8 - MY MOTHER’S LAST LIEThe name on the screen destroyed the last piece of hope I had left.

Diane Carter.
My mother.
The woman who gave me life.
The woman who held me when I cried as a child.
The woman who told me I could always come home.
Now she was connected to my grandfather’s hidden recording.
The same recording that exposed the person who destroyed his company.
“No.”
I whispered.
Ethan looked at me.
“Rachel.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice cracked.
“She wouldn’t.”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in that room knew something I didn’t want to accept.
People who love you can still betray you.
Detective Miller looked at his phone.
“We need to find out why your mother activated that number.”
“How?”
Ethan asked.
“We bring her in.”
My stomach tightened.
“No.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Rachel.”
“I need to talk to her first.”
“Alone?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
A pause.
“With you.”
Two hours later, my mother arrived at the hospital.
She looked different.
Not like the woman who visited me the day before.
She looked exhausted.
Scared.
But I had learned something.
Fear did not always mean innocence.
Sometimes…
fear meant getting caught.
She entered the room.
Her eyes immediately moved to my stomach.
“Rachel…”
I didn’t answer.
She swallowed.
“Are you and the baby okay?”
The question almost made me laugh.
Almost.
“You knew.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“You knew Lauren was going to hurt me.”
Silence.
The smallest silence.
But enough.
My mother sat down slowly.
“I never wanted this.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“But you allowed it.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
His voice was cold.
“We understand perfectly.”
I looked at my mother.
“Why?”
A tear rolled down her face.
“Rachel…”
“Why did you let them do this to me?”
She looked down.
And for several seconds…
she said nothing.
Then:
“Because I was afraid.”
The answer shocked me.
“Afraid of who?”
She looked at me.
“Daniel.”
Everyone went quiet.
“Daniel Whitmore?”
Ethan asked.
She nodded.
“He controlled everything.”
“You worked with him.”
“I had no choice.”
I felt anger rising.
“No choice?”
I touched my stomach.
“My daughter almost died.”
My mother started crying.
“I know.”
“No.”
My voice broke.
“You don’t know.”
She looked at me.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“By helping them?”
My mother looked at him.
“You think I wanted that?”
“Then tell the truth.”
She closed her eyes.
And finally said:
“Daniel threatened me.”
Silence.
“He knew about my debt.”
“What debt?”
I asked.
Her face filled with shame.
“Years ago, before your grandfather died…”
“I made mistakes.”
My heart sank.
“What mistakes?”
She whispered:
“I borrowed money.”
“From Daniel?”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“And he used that against you.”
My mother nodded.
“He told me if I didn’t help him…”
A pause.
“He would destroy our family.”
I stared at her.
“You chose Lauren.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I chose survival.”
The words hurt.
Because she didn’t say she chose me.
She said she chose herself.
“What did Daniel want?”
Ethan asked.
My mother looked at him.
“The trust.”
“We know that.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
A pause.
“The trust was only a small part.”
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather discovered Daniel had been stealing from Caldwell Industries for years.”
My breathing stopped.
“The proof?”
My mother nodded.
“Your grandfather hid it.”
“Where?”
She looked at me.
“You already have it.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The box.”
The room went silent.
“The wooden box?”
I whispered.
My mother nodded.
“I took it from you.”
My hands tightened.
“Where is it?”
She looked away.
And that scared me.
“Mom.”
“Where is the box?”
She whispered:
“I gave it to Daniel.”
Ethan immediately stood.
“You gave him evidence?”
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know what was inside.”
I stared at her.
“You didn’t open it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Her answer was quiet.
“Because your grandfather told me not to.”
For the first time…
I believed her.
Maybe she had made terrible choices.
Maybe she had failed me.
But there was something else.
Something she was still hiding.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
“What else?”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“You know something else.”
She looked away.
And that confirmed it.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Diane.”
“If you know something that can protect Rachel and the baby…”
“Now is the time.”
My mother began crying.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel didn’t act alone.”
My heart sank.
“Who helped him?”
She looked at me.
And said the one name I never expected.
“Your grandfather’s closest friend.”
“Who?”
My mother took a shaky breath.
“Your uncle.”
I froze.
“My uncle died years ago.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“He didn’t.”
The room became silent.
“Rachel…”
“Your family has been hiding someone for years.”
Then my mother pulled out her phone.
She showed us a photo.
An old picture.
My grandfather.
Daniel.
And a third man standing beside them.
A man I had never seen before.
But my mother knew.
“He is the person who created the plan.”
Ethan looked at the picture.
Then at me.
“Who is he?”
My mother whispered:
“Your grandfather’s first son.”
My blood ran cold.
Because my grandfather had always told me…
he only had one child.
My mother.
But someone had been erased from my family history.
May you like
And that person…
was the one who wanted my daughter gone.
