Chapter 6 - THE ENEMY INSIDE THE HOSPITALThe picture on my phone stayed there.

A photo of my hospital room.

My bed.

My blanket.

My chair.

Everything.

Taken from inside the room.

Not from the hallway.

Not through the window.

Inside.

My fingers started shaking.

“Ethan…”

He looked at me.

“What?”

I turned the phone toward him.

For the first time since this nightmare began…

I saw fear in his eyes.

Not panic.

Not weakness.

Fear.

Because Ethan understood exactly what I understood.

Someone had been close enough to take that picture.

Someone who could reach me.

Someone who knew where I was.

Detective Miller immediately stood.

“Everyone step away from the door.”

The room changed instantly.

The detective who had been investigating a family crime became the man protecting a target.

Ethan moved in front of me.

His body blocking mine.

Even though I knew he would never admit it…

he was scared too.

“Rachel.”

I looked at him.

“We’re leaving.”

I frowned.

“The doctor said I need monitoring.”

“I know.”

“But staying here puts you and Emma in danger.”

I looked down at my belly.

My daughter.

Our daughter.

And I knew he was right.

A nurse entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter?”

Everyone immediately turned.

The nurse stopped.

She noticed the tension.

“What happened?”

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“Can I see your identification?”

The nurse looked confused.

“My ID?”

“Yes.”

She slowly reached for her badge.

Then froze.

A tiny movement.

But enough.

Detective Miller noticed.

“Hands where I can see them.”

The woman’s face changed.

“What?”

Ethan said.

The nurse took one step backward.

Then suddenly pushed the emergency button.

The hallway alarm started screaming.

Everything happened at once.

Two security guards appeared.

The nurse started yelling.

“He’s attacking me!”

People in the hallway turned.

A crowd gathered.

For a second, it looked like she had planned everything.

Create confusion.

Make Ethan look like the threat.

But Detective Miller was faster.

He grabbed her badge.

Turned it over.

And his expression changed.

“This isn’t yours.”

The fake nurse went silent.

Security checked the system.

The real nurse assigned to my room was still on another floor.

This woman had stolen her identity.

Again.

Someone had gotten inside.

The police took her away.

But before they removed her, she looked directly at me.

Not Ethan.

Me.

And she smiled.

“You really think you won?”

I felt cold.

“What?”

She laughed.

“You still don’t know what your grandfather left you.”

The officers dragged her away.

But her words stayed.

An hour later, we were moved to a private security room.

Detective Miller placed the fake nurse’s phone on the table.

“We found something.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What?”

“Messages.”

“From who?”

The detective unlocked the phone.

The first conversation appeared.

A number saved as:

D.W.

Daniel Whitmore.

The messages were clear.

D.W.: The baby’s condition?

Unknown: Stable.

D.W.: Then increase pressure.

Unknown: What about Rachel?

D.W.: She will break eventually.

My stomach tightened.

They weren’t just trying to hurt me.

They were trying to exhaust me.

Scare me.

Force me to give up.

Then Ethan noticed another message.

He pointed.

“Scroll down.”

Detective Miller did.

A message from Daniel.

One sentence.

“The only thing standing between us and the trust is Ethan Carter.”

Everyone looked at Ethan.

He was the target now.

Not just me.

Not just Emma.

Ethan.

“Why?”

I whispered.

The detective answered:

“Because your grandfather trusted him.”

Ethan looked confused.

“But I don’t have control over the trust.”

“Maybe not officially.”

Detective Miller opened another file.

“Your grandfather created a secondary protection clause.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means if the trust is threatened by fraud or violence…”

A pause.

“Ethan becomes the temporary legal guardian of the assets until the matter is resolved.”

I stared at Ethan.

My grandfather had planned for this.

He knew.

He knew someone would come after us.

Suddenly Ethan’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

Nobody spoke.

Then a familiar voice.

Lauren.

“Ethan.”

His face hardened.

“Where are you?”

A small laugh.

“You still think you can save Rachel.”

My blood ran cold.

“Lauren.”

She continued.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

“You hurt my wife.”

“I didn’t want to.”

“Then why?”

Silence.

Then Lauren whispered:

“Because Mom promised me the money.”

I closed my eyes.

The truth hurt.

But hearing it from her made it real.

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“How much?”

Lauren answered:

“Enough to finally stop being the forgotten daughter.”

I felt tears burn my eyes.

All this.

For money.

For a trust.

For something my grandfather never intended them to have.

Then Lauren said something that made the room freeze.

“But Ethan…”

“There’s something you don’t know.”

A pause.

“Rachel’s grandfather didn’t leave everything to Rachel.”

Ethan frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Lauren’s voice lowered.

“He left a secret account.”

“An account nobody knows about.”

Detective Miller immediately looked up.

“Ask her where.”

Ethan did.

“Where is it?”

Lauren laughed softly.

“That’s the problem.”

“Only one person knows.”

A pause.

Then:

“Rachel.”

I froze.

“Me?”

Lauren continued:

“She just doesn’t remember.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the entire case changed.

My grandfather wasn’t only protecting my daughter.

He was hiding something inside me.

Something my family had spent years trying to find.

And if Lauren was telling the truth…

May you like

the attack on my baby wasn’t about the trust.

It was about a secret I carried without knowing.
