Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT I FORGOTFor a moment…

I forgot how to breathe.
Jonathan’s words echoed through the old house.
“You were there.”
No.
That wasn’t possible.
I remembered my grandfather dying.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered my mother crying.
I remembered everyone telling me he passed away peacefully.
But I was not there.
I couldn’t have been.
“You’re lying.”
I whispered.
Jonathan didn’t react.
“Am I?”
Ethan immediately stepped in front of me.
“Stay away from her.”
Jonathan looked at him.
“I’m not the one who made her forget.”
The words sent a chill through the room.
Detective Miller looked serious.
“Explain.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Rachel was at the house that night.”
“She saw something she was never supposed to see.”
My mother suddenly spoke.
“Stop.”
Everyone turned.
Her face was filled with fear.
“Diane?”
I whispered.
She looked at me.
“Rachel…”
A tear fell down her face.
“There are things you were protected from.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Protected?”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps using that word.”
My voice broke.
“Protected from what?”
My mother looked away.
“The truth.”
The memories started coming back.
Not all at once.
Like broken pieces of glass.
A dark hallway.
My grandfather’s office.
A loud argument.
Someone yelling.
A glass breaking.
I grabbed my head.
“Wait.”
Ethan immediately held my shoulder.
“What do you remember?”
I closed my eyes.
“I was there.”
Everyone became silent.
“I remember going to Grandpa’s house.”
“Why?”
Ethan asked.
I swallowed.
“He called me.”
The memory became clearer.
My grandfather sat behind his desk.
His face looked tired.
But not weak.
Afraid.
“Rachel.”
“Grandpa?”
“Sit down.”
He held a folder.
The same kind of folder my mother took after the attack.
“Someone in this family has betrayed me.”
I remembered asking:
“Who?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he placed his hand on mine.
“Promise me something.”
“What?”
“If anything happens…”
“Protect your child.”
I opened my eyes.
My entire body shook.
“He knew.”
I whispered.
“He knew Emma would be in danger.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.”
Detective Miller looked at me.
“What happened next?”
I tried to remember.
The next image came.
Daniel Whitmore entering the office.
My father behind him.
My mother crying.
My breathing became faster.
“No…”
Ethan looked worried.
“Rachel?”
“I saw them.”
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
“My father.”
The room went silent.
“And someone else.”
Jonathan asked quietly:
“Who?”
I closed my eyes.
The final memory appeared.
A man standing in the doorway.
Older.
Cold eyes.
Jonathan.
I opened my eyes.
“You were there.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.”
“But you weren’t the one who hurt Grandpa.”
Everyone froze.
Jonathan looked at my mother.
“Tell her.”
My mother started crying.
“No.”
“Diane.”
Jonathan said quietly.
“She deserves the truth.”
My mother covered her face.
Then whispered:
“Your grandfather was poisoned.”
The room went completely silent.
“What?”
Ethan said.
My mother nodded.
“Daniel put something in his drink.”
My stomach turned.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“Because you were the only witness.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
My mother looked at me.
“You saw Daniel do it.”
The memory hit me.
A glass on the desk.
Daniel’s hand.
My grandfather pushing the drink away.
Then darkness.
“What happened to me?”
I whispered.
My mother looked ashamed.
“Daniel gave you something too.”
My heart stopped.
“He made you forget.”
Ethan’s face turned cold.
“He drugged her?”
Detective Miller immediately wrote it down.
My mother nodded.
“He told us you had a panic attack.”
“He said you imagined everything.”
I felt tears fall.
All these years…
I thought I was losing my memory because I was young.
Because I was emotional.
Because grief changed me.
But someone stole that night from me.
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Now you understand.”
I looked at him.
“Understand what?”
“Why they needed your baby gone.”
I froze.
“Because when Emma is born…”
“Your grandfather’s final protection activates.”
“What protection?”
Jonathan answered:
“DNA confirmation.”
Detective Miller looked up.
“Explain.”
Jonathan continued:
“Your grandfather knew someone might fake documents.”
“He knew someone might steal the trust.”
“So he added one final condition.”
A pause.
“The true heir must have a child carrying Caldwell blood.”
I touched my stomach.
“My daughter.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Your daughter is proof.”
Suddenly…
the lights in the house went out.
Everyone froze.
A phone rang.
Not mine.
Not Ethan’s.
My mother’s.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned white.
“Who is it?”
I asked.
She whispered:
“Daniel.”
She answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s voice came through.
“Diane.”
“You really thought you could tell Rachel everything?”
My mother froze.
Daniel continued:
“You made the same mistake your father did.”
A pause.
“You chose your daughter over yourself.”
Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Now I have to remove the last witness.”
The call ended.
Everyone looked at me.
Because we all understood.
Daniel wasn’t coming for the trust anymore.
May you like
He was coming for me.
And my baby.
