Chapter 9 - THE UNCLE WHO NEVER EXISTEDThe photo stayed on the screen.

Three people.

My grandfather.

Daniel Whitmore.

And a man I had never seen before.

A man my mother claimed was my grandfather’s first son.

I stared at the picture.

Trying to find something familiar.

A smile.

A face.

Anything.

But there was nothing.

Just a stranger standing beside the two men who had shaped my family’s future.

“My grandfather had another child?”

I whispered.

My mother nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“How is that possible?”

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Because he erased him.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

My mother took a deep breath.

“Because your uncle was dangerous.”

The room became quiet.

Detective Miller, who had been listening carefully, stepped closer.

“What was his name?”

My mother looked at him.

“Jonathan Caldwell.”

The detective immediately wrote it down.

“Where is he now?”

My mother looked away.

“I don’t know.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“But you know he’s alive.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

She swallowed.

“Because he contacted me.”

My heart dropped.

“When?”

My mother looked at me.

“After your grandfather died.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

The timing.

Everything started after Grandpa’s death.

The trust.

The attacks.

The lies.

“What did he want?”

I asked.

My mother hesitated.

Then answered:

“The inheritance.”

Of course.

Another person.

Another claim.

Another reason my daughter became a target.

“He told me your grandfather stole his life.”

My mother continued.

“He said everything should have belonged to him.”

Ethan shook his head.

“But your grandfather left everything to Rachel because he trusted her.”

My mother nodded.

“That’s why Jonathan hated her.”

I felt sick.

“He hated me?”

“No.”

My mother looked at my stomach.

“He hated what your daughter represented.”

The room went silent.

“My baby?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

My mother looked at the floor.

“Because once Emma is born, the trust becomes permanent.”

“And Jonathan loses his chance.”

I closed my eyes.

This was never just about Lauren.

Never just about Daniel.

There was an entire family war happening around my unborn child.

Then Detective Miller received another notification.

He looked at his phone.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Ethan asked.

The detective turned the screen around.

A police database search result.

JONATHAN CALDWELL

Status:

Deceased.

My mother’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Detective Miller looked at her.

“According to official records, Jonathan Caldwell died twelve years ago.”

I looked at my mother.

“You said he was alive.”

She whispered:

“He is.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Miller pointed at the file.

“His death certificate may be fake.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the signature belongs to Daniel Whitmore.”

My stomach tightened.

Another lie.

Another cover-up.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, no picture.

Only a message.

“Stop searching for Jonathan.”

A second message appeared.

“Your grandfather tried. Look what happened to him.”

My blood ran cold.

Ethan immediately asked:

“Can you trace it?”

Detective Miller tried.

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“It’s coming from…”

He stopped.

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“The Caldwell family cemetery.”

Everyone froze.

“Why would someone send a message from there?”

Ethan asked.

Detective Miller grabbed his jacket.

“Because they want us to go there.”

“No.”

Ethan said immediately.

“We don’t walk into traps.”

But my eyes stayed on the message.

Because there was something else.

A final line.

One that made my heart stop.

“Ask your mother about the night your grandfather died.”

I slowly turned toward Diane.

My mother.

The woman who had spent days hiding the truth.

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

“What happened that night?”

Her face changed.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

One bigger than the trust.

Bigger than Daniel.

Bigger than Jonathan.

“Tell me.”

My mother started crying.

“I didn’t want you to know.”

“Know what?”

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Your grandfather wasn’t supposed to die that night.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

Ethan asked.

My mother covered her face.

“He was going to expose everything.”

“Daniel.”

“Jonathan.”

“The stolen money.”

A pause.

“And someone stopped him.”

My voice barely came out.

“Who?”

My mother looked at me.

And the answer destroyed me.

“Someone you invited into our family.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

My mother whispered:

“Your father.”

The room exploded into silence.

Because my father…

May you like

the man who always said he protected me…

might have been the person who started everything.
