Chapter 1 - GATE 42

“Hey, love,” Daniel whispered. “I’m still at the hospital.”

I was looking straight at him.

He just didn’t know it yet.

From the second-floor balcony at Chicago O’Hare, I watched my husband stand near Gate 42 with another woman tucked against his side.

He wasn’t in scrubs.

He wasn’t saving a patient.

He was wearing the navy anniversary jacket I had bought him, and her hand rested against his chest like it belonged there.

“Emergency procedure,” he said into the phone. “I’ll probably be here all night.”

Below me, his father Richard laughed.

His sister Lauren checked passports.

Daniel’s children, Sophie and Mason, stood beside matching suitcases.

Cancun tags hung from the handles.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

“Tough night?” I asked.

“You have no idea.”

Then Daniel kissed the woman.

His family did not flinch.

Nobody looked surprised.

Nobody looked guilty.

They had seen this before.

“I love you,” Daniel whispered.

Three words.

One final lie.

He ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket.

I opened my camera.

I recorded the kiss.

The luggage.

The boarding passes.

Richard hugging the woman.

Lauren taking a group photo.

Then my banking app buzzed.

$6,842.17.

PALM AZUL RESORT — CANCUN.

Paid with our joint card.

My throat tightened.

For two years, Daniel had said we were too busy for a vacation.

Too responsible.

Too focused on Sophie’s college.

Apparently, responsibility only applied when I was invited.

Another text arrived.

Going into surgery. Won’t be reachable. Sleep well, beautiful.

I took a screenshot.

Then Daniel looked up.

Straight at the balcony.

Our eyes met.

His face went blank.

The woman followed his stare.

Richard stopped smiling.

Lauren lowered her phone.

Daniel pulled his arm from the woman’s waist and started toward the escalator.

I smiled.

Then I turned and walked away.

He called before I reached the garage.

I let it ring.

Again.

Again.

On the sixth call, I answered.

“Rachel, where are you?”

“At the hospital, apparently.”

“Don’t do this.”

“Who is she?”

Silence.

“Come home. We’ll talk.”

“You’re boarding a plane.”

“I can cancel.”

That told me something.

He wasn’t sorry.

He was scared.

“Go on your trip,” I said.

“Rachel—”

I hung up.

Because O’Hare was not where I was going to confront my husband.

May you like

It was where I started collecting evidence.

And Daniel had no idea the first lie I found was about to lead me straight to his money.
