Chapter 6 - THE DEBT THEY USED AGAINST ME

Richard answered my call immediately.

“You found the payment.”

“Yes.”

“My mother signed a repayment agreement.”

“She did.”

“But you never collected.”

“No.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because Daniel loved you.”

“That sentence doesn’t work anymore.”

Richard sighed.

My mother had been terrified I would sell everything to pay for her care.

Richard covered the balance.

Later she offered repayment from her estate.

He told her to leave the money to me instead.

That money became most of the down payment on our house.

“So Daniel thinks that bought him my ownership?” I asked.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You helped with the deed.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You helped him hide an affair.”

Another silence.

“Rachel, marriages are complicated.”

“Stop saying that like complexity makes lying respectable.”

Then Richard said something useful.

“Daniel isn’t as financially strong as you think.”

“What does that mean?”

“His consulting business has debt.”

“How much?”

“More than a million.”

The urgency suddenly made sense.

The house was not only about replacing me.

It was about protecting Daniel from bad investments.

Maya ordered credit reports and lien searches.

At 4:28 p.m., she called.

“We found a $900,000 line of credit.”

“In Daniel’s name?”

“In both of yours.”

My stomach dropped.

“I never signed that.”

“The bank has a guaranty that looks like your signature.”

A forensic examiner reviewed it.

The signature was close.

But not mine.

Wrong pressure.

Wrong middle initial.

And I had been in Boston the day it was supposedly signed.

The bank froze further draws and opened a fraud review.

That night, Daniel called.

“You’re destroying everything.”

“I didn’t put my name on your debt.”

“I was protecting us.”

I went still.

“Did you sign my name?”

“The investment would have benefited both of us.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I could have recovered the losses.”

“So you tried to move the house.”

“I was trying to keep creditors away.”

“By taking my share?”

“You always assume the worst.”

I laughed.

“You lied about surgery while boarding a plane with your pregnant girlfriend.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said quietly, “I was a coward.”

“Yes.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“No. You were going to position the money first.”

He didn’t deny it.

Before hanging up, he said, “My father is going to make Sophie and Mason say you knew about Vanessa.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He thinks it protects the family.”

Five minutes later, Sophie came downstairs holding her phone.

Her face was white.

“Rachel… Grandpa just texted me.”

She handed it over.

You need to remember the family version. Your father and Rachel were already separated.

Sophie looked at me.

“What family version?”
