Chapter 15 - WHERE I WAS GOING

“Is he hurt?”
“No,” Sophie said quickly. “He called me after seeing you.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did he say?”
“That he finally understood you weren’t waiting for him to become better.”
I leaned against the wall.
Sophie sniffed.
“He sounded sad. And I feel guilty because part of me still loves him.”
“Oh, sweetheart.”
“After everything, how can I?”
“Because he’s your father.”
“But he hurt us.”
“Both things can be true.”
She cried quietly.
I looked back toward the terminal.
Daniel was somewhere beyond security.
For years, our family had survived on false choices.
Love him or hate him.
Protect the family or tell the truth.
Forgive or stay angry forever.
Real life was messier.
Sophie could love her father and keep boundaries.
Mason could be angry and still heal.
Lauren could apologize and not be instantly forgiven.
Richard could change without earning back every relationship.
Vanessa could regret what she did and still live with the consequences.
And I could remember loving Daniel without wanting him back.
“Come over tonight,” I told Sophie.
“Can Mason come?”
“Of course.”
“Tacos?”
I smiled.
“Tacos.”
That evening, the three of us crowded around my crooked dining table.
Mason dropped salsa on the floor.
Sophie laughed.
Nobody panicked.
Nobody hid anything.
Nobody told me a story I was expected to pretend was true.
Later, after they left, I found my old wedding photo in a box.
Daniel and I were laughing in it.
For months, I had wanted to tear it up.
I didn’t.
That day had been real.
My love had been real.
The ending did not erase the beginning.
But the beginning did not excuse the ending either.
I put the photo back in the box and closed the lid.
The next morning, I flew to New York for work.
At O’Hare, I passed the sign for Gate 42.
An announcement echoed overhead.
“Final boarding call.”
I kept walking.
For a long time, I thought Gate 42 was where my marriage ended.
I was wrong.
My marriage had been ending in hidden accounts, fake hospital shifts, family lies, and papers waiting for my signature long before I saw Daniel kiss Vanessa.
Gate 42 was simply where the lie lost its hiding place.
Daniel thought getting caught would be the worst thing that happened to us.
Maybe it was the worst thing that happened to him.
For me, it became the moment I stopped living inside someone else’s version of my life.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Sophie.
LOVE YOU. DON’T MISS YOUR FLIGHT.
I laughed.
Then I typed back.
Never again.
I put my phone away and walked toward my gate.
My own name was on the ticket.
My own card had paid for it.
My own plans waited at the other end.
No husband lying about where he was.
No family version to memorize.
No hidden signature.
No secret life.
May you like
Just me.
And for the first time in twelve years, I knew exactly where I was going.
