Chapter 5 - THE BACKUP PLAN

Maya had the tablet preserved by a forensic technician.

We did not wander through it.

We only kept what Sophie had already seen.

The phrase “backup plan” appeared three times.

For one ugly hour, my mind imagined every possibility.

Then the answer surfaced.

It was financial.

Daniel wanted me to sign a postnuptial agreement.

If I refused, he planned to move consulting money, secure the house, and file for divorce after Vanessa’s pregnancy was impossible to hide.

A message from Richard said:

Not until the house is clean.

Daniel replied:

She trusts me. I can get the signatures.

My hands went cold.

That night, at 1:13 a.m., the front door alarm beeped.

Daniel’s code.

He had returned from Mexico.

“Rachel?” he called from downstairs.

I locked my bedroom door and called police—not because I believed he would hurt me, but because I didn’t know why he had come home in the middle of the night.

Sophie opened her door.

“Dad?”

Daniel stopped on the stairs.

“What are you doing here?”

“I asked Rachel if I could stay.”

“This doesn’t involve you.”

“You brought me to the airport with your girlfriend.”

“Sophie, it’s complicated.”

“You said Rachel knew.”

Daniel looked toward my room.

“You’ve been filling her head.”

I opened the door.

“No. You filled it first.”

Police arrived.

The temporary order did not bar Daniel from entering, so officers advised us to separate for the night.

He agreed to leave.

At the front door, he turned.

“You think you understand everything because you found some statements.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Then tell me.”

His jaw tightened.

“Ask your attorney who paid for your mother’s cancer treatment twelve years ago.”

My chest went tight.

“My mother had insurance.”

“Not for everything.”

He opened the door.

“You think I owe you, Rachel? Half this marriage was built on a debt you never knew existed.”

He left.

I barely slept.

By morning, Maya had located old billing records.

My mother’s final cancer balance had been $186,000.

It had been paid in one wire.

Not by Daniel.

By Richard.

And attached to the archived estate file was a repayment agreement I had never seen.

For the first time, I wondered whether Daniel’s “backup plan” had begun years before Vanessa ever entered our lives.
