Chapter 4 - THE BABY

Vanessa was four months pregnant.

Richard admitted it after twenty seconds of silence.

The fertility clinic charge had been eight months earlier.

This was not a reckless affair.

Daniel had been building a replacement life.

I shut the door in Richard’s face.

Then I sat on the kitchen floor and cried.

I had wanted a baby with Daniel.

I had endured injections, procedures, bad news, and three failed rounds of IVF.

He held me while I cried and said, “I can’t keep doing this. It’s breaking us.”

Then he paid for fertility treatment with someone else.

Five minutes later, I stood up.

Pain could wait.

Evidence could not.

Maya filed for divorce that afternoon and requested temporary restraints on major marital transfers.

The judge signed them.

At 3:12 p.m., Daniel called from Cancun.

“What the hell did you file?”

“A divorce.”

“You froze me out of my own money.”

“A judge told both of us not to move major assets.”

“You should have talked to me first.”

“I watched you board a plane with your pregnant girlfriend while telling me you were in surgery.”

Silence.

“Who told you she was pregnant?”

“Does it matter?”

“Rachel, I was going to tell you.”

“When? After Cancun?”

“Yes.”

“After you transferred my house?”

“I never forged anything.”

I went still.

“I didn’t say forged.”

Daniel stopped talking.

There it was.

A tiny pause.

A man realizing I knew more than he expected.

He recovered fast.

“The deed was asset planning.”

“No, it wasn’t.”

“You’re emotional.”

“Yes.”

“Then stop making permanent decisions.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“If you turn this into a war, everyone loses.”

“I’m not starting a war. I’m ending access.”

I hung up.

That evening Sophie came to my house with a backpack.

“Can I stay?”

“Always.”

She cried against my shoulder.

“Dad told me you stopped loving him.”

I pulled back.

“What?”

“He said you didn’t want kids because you wanted your career. He said Vanessa understood family.”

My stomach turned.

“I wanted a child with your father very much.”

Sophie stared at me.

“He said you refused more IVF.”

“No.”

She sat down hard.

Then she reached into her bag.

“Dad gave me his old tablet. His messages still sync.”

“I don’t want you accessing anything illegally.”

“I didn’t. It was already there.”

She placed it on the table.

A message between Daniel and Richard filled the screen.

Daniel:

SHE’LL SIGN EVENTUALLY. IF NOT, WE USE THE BACKUP PLAN.

May you like

Richard:

THEN MAKE SURE THE BACKUP DOESN’T COME BACK TO ME.
