Chapter 8 - VANESSA SPEAKS

Daniel could not explain the messages.

He agreed to restore the children’s money from his share of the hidden account and a separate investment property.

Outside mediation, Vanessa approached me.

“Rachel, please.”

I stopped.

Maya stayed beside me.

“I didn’t know at first,” Vanessa said.

“You went to Cancun with his family.”

“I mean when we started.”

“How long?”

“Fourteen months.”

My stomach turned.

“He told me you were separated.”

“When did you learn we weren’t?”

“Six months ago.”

“And you stayed.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

At least she did not insult me with another lie.

Then she handed Maya a sealed envelope.

“My attorney said I could give you copies.”

Inside were texts from Daniel.

If Rachel gets aggressive, the condo money needs to look like loan repayment.

Another:

Dad says the house transfer is still possible if we get her signature.

Then the sentence that stayed with me.

She trusts me when I use the hospital. That’s the easiest part.

The easiest part.

My trust.

His favorite hiding place.

Vanessa swallowed.

“There’s something else. Daniel said the baby would fix everything.”

“Fix what?”

“His inheritance.”

Richard had a family trust worth far more than I knew.

A portion eventually passed down through Daniel’s branch.

Another child increased that branch’s future share.

The baby was innocent.

But Daniel had talked about that child like another line on a balance sheet.

Two days later, the hospital placed Daniel on administrative leave.

Not because of adultery.

Because an internal review found he had altered scheduling entries and claimed emergency procedures on days he was not working.

His lies had crossed into his career.

He called from a blocked number.

“You sent things to the hospital.”

“No.”

“Then Vanessa did.”

“I don’t know.”

“She’s trying to destroy me.”

I almost laughed.

“You left me for her and now she’s the villain?”

“She’s scared.”

“So was I when I saw my name on a $900,000 debt.”

Silence.

Then he said, “I loved you once.”

“I know.”

“I think part of me still does.”

“No. Part of you misses what I made easy.”

He breathed slowly.

“You hate me.”

“I’m too tired to hate you.”

That hurt him more than anger.

May you like

Before he hung up, Daniel whispered, “My father hasn’t told you everything about the house.”

Then the line went dead.
