Chapter 14 - BACK AT GATE 42

The terminal looked smaller than I remembered.

That surprised me.

In my memory, Gate 42 had become a giant stage where my life collapsed.

In reality, it was carpet, glass, metal seats, coffee cups, tired travelers.

I stood at the same balcony.

Below me, a couple argued over a suitcase.

A child slept across three chairs.

A man hugged his wife goodbye.

For one second, I heard Daniel’s voice again.

I’m still at the hospital.

Then I remembered what came after.

The kiss.

The family.

The luggage.

The look on Daniel’s face when he saw me.

I waited for rage.

It did not come.

I waited for grief.

Only a little.

Mostly, I felt grateful to the woman I had been that morning.

She did not run downstairs screaming.

She did not beg.

She looked.

She recorded.

She checked the money.

She called a lawyer.

Most importantly, she trusted the part of herself Daniel had spent years teaching her to doubt.

My phone buzzed.

Sophie.

DINNER SUNDAY? MASON WANTS TACOS.

I smiled.

Wouldn’t miss it.

Another notification appeared.

A calendar reminder.

The anniversary of my divorce.

I deleted it.

I didn’t need to celebrate the day a marriage ended.

I wanted to celebrate the days that came after.

As I turned to leave, someone called my name.

“Rachel?”

My body froze.

Daniel stood twenty feet away.

He looked different.

Thinner.

Older.

No navy anniversary jacket.

No Vanessa.

Just a carry-on bag and an awkward expression.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then he gave a small nod toward Gate 42.

“Of all places.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m flying to Minneapolis for a medical conference.”

“Okay.”

He looked at me carefully.

“You look good.”

“I’m good.”

“That’s better.”

A boarding announcement filled the silence.

Daniel shifted his bag.

“I still think about that morning.”

“So do I.”

“I wish I had told you the truth before you had to see it.”

“I wish you had too.”

He nodded.

No plea.

No excuse.

Then he said, “Take care, Rachel.”

“You too.”

He walked toward security.

I watched for only a second.

Then I turned the other way.

And that should have been the last chapter.

But when I reached the exit, Sophie called.

She was crying.

“Rachel, I need you.”

My heart jumped.

“What happened?”

May you like

“It’s Dad.”

I stopped walking.
