Chapter 2 - THE MONEY TRAIL

I drove to my office instead of home.
I’m a forensic accountant.
Daniel liked to joke that I “found commas in spreadsheets.”
He never understood my real job.
I found lies people thought they had buried.
By 9:10 that morning, I had started with my own marriage.
The Cancun charge was only the beginning.
There were hotel deposits hidden under a travel company.
Restaurant charges on nights Daniel claimed he was on call.
Two jewelry purchases.
And a recurring $3,200 transfer to North Lake Wellness Consulting.
I searched public records.
Owner: Vanessa Cole.
Thirty-six.
Physical therapist.
River North condo.
Then I found a hospital charity photo.
Vanessa stood three people away from me.
Daniel’s hand was on my back.
She was smiling at him.
The transfers totaled $48,000.
Worse, the money had come from the Bennett Family Education Fund—the account meant for Sophie and Mason.
An account I contributed to every month.
I called the bank and froze our joint credit card.
Then I called attorney Maya Chen.
“I need a divorce lawyer.”
She went quiet.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Shared property?”
“House, investments, retirement. And apparently a husband using family money on his girlfriend.”
“Preserve everything. Don’t move major money yet.”
I forwarded screenshots.
Then Sophie called.
She was seventeen.
I had helped raise her since she was ten.
“Rachel,” she whispered. “Dad says you froze the card.”
“Yes.”
“We’re at the gate.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then, “You saw us.”
“Yes.”
She started crying.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“How long have you known about Vanessa?”
“Almost a year.”
My chest tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Grandpa said you knew.”
I sat down.
“Knew what?”
“That you and Dad were basically separated.”
“We were not separated.”
Sophie stopped breathing for a second.
“He said you stayed married because of the house and insurance.”
“He lied.”
“Oh my God.”
“Listen to me. You were told a story by adults you trusted. This is not yours to fix.”
“I don’t want to get on the plane.”
“You don’t have to.”
By noon, Sophie refused to board.
Mason stayed with her.
Richard and Lauren remained behind.
Daniel and Vanessa went to Cancun anyway.
My husband chose the girlfriend after his own children walked away.
Then my bank sent another alert.
A brokerage account in both our names had requested a password reset.
I had never heard of that account.
Balance: $312,000.
Three years of hidden money.
One transfer caught my eye.
$75,000 to a closing attorney for Vanessa Cole.
Daniel had helped buy her condo.
Then I saw another payment.
$22,000.
A fertility clinic.
Memo: V. COLE / D. BENNETT.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Daniel and I had stopped IVF two years earlier because he told me he could not survive another loss.
Apparently, he only meant another loss with me.
