Chapter 13 - The Truth Behind Richard’s SilenceThe vault was completely dark.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew who to trust.

Because the message on the screen had destroyed the last bit of certainty we had.

“ONE PERSON INSIDE IS LYING.”

And then…

Bianca’s voice.

“The truth was hidden inside the people you trusted.”

I stood frozen.

My heart was beating so loudly I could hear it.

All my life…

I searched for the person who betrayed my family.

But every answer led me back to the same place.

The people closest to me.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Thomas.

Richard.

Everyone had hidden something.

The question was…

Who had hidden the biggest lie?

The emergency lights finally turned on.

Everyone looked at each other.

Richard was standing near the vault door.

His face was pale.

Daniel immediately stepped toward him.

“Dad.”

Richard looked at him.

“I know what this looks like.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“We don’t know anything anymore.”

The words hurt.

Because that was exactly how I felt.

I looked at Richard.

“Tell me.”

He looked at me.

“Emily…”

“No.”

My voice became firm.

“I need the truth.”

A long silence followed.

Then Richard sat down.

And for the first time…

The strongest man in the room looked exhausted.

“I knew your father.”

Everyone already knew that.

But then he continued.

“I knew Alexander before he became powerful.”

Thomas frowned.

“You never told me that.”

Richard looked at him.

“Because I made a promise.”

I almost laughed.

Another promise.

Always another promise.

“To who?”

I asked.

Richard looked at the old video screen.

“Your mother.”

Everyone froze.

“My mother?”

Richard nodded.

“She came to me the night Alexander disappeared.”

My breathing stopped.

“What happened?”

Richard looked down.

“She was carrying something.”

“The evidence?”

“No.”

A pause.

“She was carrying you.”

Silence.

I stared.

“What?”

Richard continued:

“You were a baby.”

My eyes filled.

“She came to me because she had nowhere else to go.”

“Why?”

“Because Alexander was being hunted.”

A pause.

“And she believed someone inside his own organization was trying to kill you.”

I looked at the DNA report.

At my entire hidden life.

“So you hid me?”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because the people searching for you were still alive.”

A pause.

“And if they knew who you were…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

I understood.

But then I remembered the video.

My mother’s warning.

Do not trust him.

I looked at Richard.

“Then why did my mother warn me about you?”

The room went silent.

Richard closed his eyes.

“Because she had a reason.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared.

“Dad?”

Richard looked at him.

“I didn’t betray her.”

A pause.

“But I did something unforgivable.”

My heart tightened.

“What?”

Richard looked at me.

“I lied.”

Silence.

“About what?”

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Emily.

“My mother gave you this?”

I whispered.

Richard nodded.

“She asked me to destroy it.”

Everyone froze.

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Richard looked at the envelope.

“Because I couldn’t destroy the last thing she left for you.”

I took it.

My hands were shaking.

Inside was another letter.

Different handwriting.

Alexander’s.

My biological father.

I opened it.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

My vision blurred.

But I need you to know one thing.

I never left you because I wanted to.

A tear fell.

I left because staying would have killed you.

I continued reading.

There is one person who knows the entire truth.

A pause.

The person who started the chain of betrayal.

My heart raced.

Then the next line appeared.

“It was not Bianca.”

Everyone froze.

The letter continued.

“Bianca was only a weapon.”

“The person controlling her was someone who knew every weakness of our family.”

I looked up.

Richard.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Thomas.

Everyone was silent.

Then I read the final sentence.

“The person who destroyed us was the person who raised my daughter after I disappeared.”

My hands froze.

My daughter.

After I disappeared.

Everyone looked confused.

Then Thomas whispered:

“No…”

Richard’s face changed.

Because he understood.

I looked at him.

“Who?”

Richard didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because the vault suddenly unlocked.

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

She was older.

Her hair was gray.

Her eyes were cold.

And everyone in the room recognized her.

Victoria stepped back.

“No.”

Daniel whispered:

“Grandmother?”

The woman smiled.

“Yes.”

Richard’s mother.

The woman who had been dead for years.

The woman from my mother’s warning.

She looked directly at me.

“Emily Carter.”

A pause.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

Nobody moved.

Because the impossible had just happened.

A dead woman had walked back into the house.

And she was carrying the final truth.

She looked at Richard.

“You failed.”

Richard’s face turned pale.

“I tried to protect her.”

The woman smiled.

“You always were weak.”

Then she looked at me.

“Your parents hid you.”

A pause.

“Richard protected you.”

Another pause.

“But I was the one who created you.”

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What?”

She smiled.

“Because Emily…”

A pause.

“You are not just Alexander Carter’s daughter.”

She stepped closer.

“You are the heir to everything I built.”

The lights flickered.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your real enemy was never trying to destroy your family.”

May you like

A pause.

“She was trying to inherit it.”
