Chapter 5 - The Family That Hid My PastThe birth record remained on the table.

My name.

My birthday.

My parents’ names.

And at the bottom…

A signature that should never have been there.

Richard’s.

I stared at the document.

Then at him.

“You knew.”

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Richard looked away.

That hurt more than any explanation could have.

Because he had been the one person who seemed different.

The one person who saw me.

The one person who stood up for me.

And now…

I realized he had been hiding something too.

“Emily…”

Richard stepped closer.

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.”

The room became silent.

“I spent years believing I had no family left.”

My voice shook.

“I spent years wondering why I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere.”

I looked at the photograph.

“And all of you knew something.”

Nobody answered.

Because they did.

Thomas Carter looked at Richard.

“You promised her parents.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What is happening?”

No one responded.

For once…

Everyone was protecting a secret.

Except me.

I turned toward Thomas.

“Tell me.”

He looked at me.

“The truth?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“All of it.”

Thomas nodded.

“Your parents were not poor.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“They owned part of this property.”

The room went quiet.

“This house?”

He nodded.

“Before Richard bought it, this land belonged to your family.”

I looked at Richard.

He didn’t deny it.

“Why?”

I whispered.

“Why would my parents lose it?”

Thomas looked at Victoria.

“Because someone wanted it.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria’s face changed.

“No.”

Thomas continued.

“Your parents discovered something hidden beneath this property.”

“What?”

“A document.”

Richard finally spoke.

“A document that could destroy powerful people.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

Because Thomas did.

“People inside this family.”

The room became cold.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom?”

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“Don’t listen to him.”

But her voice lacked confidence.

Thomas smiled sadly.

“She always was good at pretending.”

Victoria’s face hardened.

“You have no proof.”

Thomas opened the folder.

He removed another document.

A letter.

“This was written by Emily’s mother.”

My heart stopped.

“My mother?”

Thomas nodded.

“She wrote it before she disappeared.”

I took the letter.

My hands were shaking.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But seeing my mother’s name…

Made something inside me break.

I opened it.

Dear Emily,

The first line already brought tears to my eyes.

If you are reading this, then I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you the truth myself.

I continued.

There are people who will tell you that your family abandoned you.

A pause.

They are lying.

My breathing became heavier.

Your father and I fought to protect you.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

The house was never the prize.

You were.

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

I continued reading.

The people searching for this house are not looking for money.

They are looking for what we hid inside it.

A pause.

Trust the person who gives you the truth, not the person who gives you comfort.

The letter ended there.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just a warning.

I lowered the paper.

“Where is the thing they hid?”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice came through.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Cold.

“Did Emily finally learn who she is?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Who is this?”

The woman laughed softly.

“You know exactly who I am.”

Richard stood immediately.

“No.”

His face went pale.

“Who is it?”

I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Hello, Emily.”

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized the voice.

Not because I knew her.

Because I had heard it before.

In my nightmares.

The woman continued:

“You have something that belongs to me.”

I gripped the phone.

“What?”

A pause.

“The key.”

Everyone froze.

“What key?”

The woman laughed.

“The key your parents died protecting.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas whispered:

“She found you.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

His face was filled with fear.

“The woman who destroyed your family.”

A pause.

“The woman who has been watching you your entire life.”

The lights suddenly went out again.

And this time…

When they came back on…

Something was missing.

The birth record.

The letter from my mother.

And on the table…

A new message.

Written in black ink.

“Stop searching for the past, Emily.”

“Or I will make sure you lose your future.”

I stared at the words.

Because whoever was behind everything…

Was no longer hiding.

They wanted me to know they were there.

And they wanted me afraid.

But they didn’t understand one thing.

That night…

I had already lost everything.

My marriage.

My trust.

My belief in this family.

There was nothing left for them to take.

May you like

Except the truth.

And I was finally ready to fight for it.
