Chapter 4 - The Woman In The PhotographThe photograph sat on the dining table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody wanted to.

Because everyone was trying to understand the impossible.

A picture of me.

Standing in front of this house.

Ten years ago.

But I had never been here before.

At least…

That was what I believed.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then looked at me.

“Emily…”

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Not accusing.

Confused.

“Do you know anything about this?”

I shook my head immediately.

“No.”

My hands trembled.

“I swear I have never seen this house before I married you.”

Richard picked up the photograph carefully.

“The date is real.”

Victoria suddenly laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Cold.

“This is ridiculous.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stood there with her arms crossed.

“You’re all acting like a photograph proves something.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Then explain it.”

Victoria looked away.

For the first time…

She looked nervous.

I noticed.

And so did everyone else.

“Victoria.”

Richard’s voice became serious.

“Why are you afraid of this picture?”

“I’m not.”

But her reaction said otherwise.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.”

She remained silent.

That silence answered the question.

Richard placed the photograph on the table.

“We need to find out where this came from.”

He turned toward the security room.

“Check every camera.”

A guard immediately moved.

But before he left…

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire house went dark.

Someone screamed.

The Christmas candles became the only light in the room.

I felt Daniel reach for my hand.

A reflex.

The same hand he had ignored earlier.

But this time…

I pulled away.

Because trust wasn’t rebuilt with one gesture.

The emergency lights finally turned on.

And everyone froze.

The envelope was gone.

The photograph was still there.

But something else had appeared.

A second photograph.

Richard slowly picked it up.

His face changed.

“What is it?”

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Daniel took it from him.

Then his expression turned pale.

The picture showed a young woman.

A woman I had never seen before.

Standing beside Richard.

Holding a baby.

And written on the back…

Was a name.

Emily Carter.

My name.

My breathing stopped.

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You know her?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t.”

But my body reacted before my mind could.

Because something about that woman felt familiar.

Her eyes.

Her smile.

Like a memory I couldn’t reach.

Richard sat down slowly.

“Emily…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His voice became quiet.

“I think there’s something about your past you were never told.”

The room went silent.

“My past?”

He nodded.

“Your parents.”

My heart tightened.

“What about them?”

Richard looked at the photograph.

“They were connected to this house.”

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“My parents died when I was young.”

“I know.”

A pause.

“But before they died…”

He looked at me.

“They were trying to protect something.”

“What?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Because someone else did.

Victoria.

“The ownership.”

Everyone turned.

She was standing near the window.

And for the first time…

She wasn’t pretending.

She looked afraid.

“What did you say?”

Daniel asked.

Victoria swallowed.

“The house.”

A pause.

“It was never just a house.”

Richard looked furious.

“You knew?”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

The room exploded with tension.

Daniel stared.

“Mom…”

She ignored him.

“The house contains something.”

“What?”

I asked.

Victoria looked at me.

“Something your parents left behind.”

My heart started racing.

“What did they leave?”

She didn’t answer.

Because suddenly…

The front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

Richard immediately recognized him.

His face changed.

“No.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Dad?”

Richard whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

The man looked around the room.

Then his eyes stopped on me.

He smiled.

“Emily.”

I froze.

Because I had never met him.

But he knew my name.

“I’ve been looking for you for a long time.”

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

“My name is Thomas Carter.”

My heart stopped.

Carter.

My family name.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“I’m your father’s brother.”

Silence.

I stared at him.

“My father had no brother.”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”

Richard looked terrified.

Because he knew.

The secret buried inside the house…

Was finally coming back.

Thomas slowly placed a folder on the table.

Inside was an old document.

A birth record.

My birth record.

But at the bottom…

There was something that made my blood run cold.

A signature.

Richard’s signature.

I looked at him.

“You knew about me?”

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was becoming clear.

Everyone in this family knew something about my life.

Everyone except me.

May you like

And the house I was about to leave…

Was the same house that had been hiding my identity for years.
