Chapter 2 - The House That Was Never HisNobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.
The Christmas lights still glowed around the room.
The candles were still burning.
The food was still sitting on the table.
But the warmth of the holiday was gone.
Because my father-in-law’s words had changed everything.
“This house was never yours to give away.”
Daniel stared at him.
Confusion covered his face.
“Dad…”
His voice was uncertain.
“What are you talking about?”
My father-in-law, Richard, didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at me first.
At my burned hand.
My swollen cheek.
The wedding ring sitting beside Daniel’s plate.
Then he looked at his wife.
Victoria.
And for the first time in all the years I had known him…
I saw disappointment in his eyes.
“Is this what happens when I’m not home?”
Richard asked quietly.
Victoria immediately stood.
“Richard, don’t misunderstand.”
Her voice changed.
The confidence she had moments ago was gone.
“She was being disrespectful.”
I looked at her.
Disrespectful?
I had spent years trying to earn her approval.
I cooked.
I cleaned.
I remembered everyone’s birthdays.
I showed up to every family event.
And somehow…
I was still the problem.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Disrespectful?”
He pointed toward my hand.
“Is that what you call this?”
Victoria opened her mouth.
But no words came out.
Daniel quickly stood.
“Dad, this is a family matter.”
Richard looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“This stopped being a family matter the second your wife was hurt and everyone laughed.”
The room went silent.
Because he said it out loud.
Everyone laughed.
Nobody could pretend anymore.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Dad, you don’t understand what happened.”
Richard picked up the envelope.
“You’re right.”
A pause.
“I don’t understand how my son watched his wife get slapped and still defended the person who did it.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Mom was just trying to teach her.”
Richard stared at him.
“Teach her?”
A bitter smile appeared on his face.
“Is that what you call hurting someone?”
Nobody answered.
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside were several documents.
Victoria’s expression changed the moment she saw them.
“What is that?”
Richard ignored her.
He pulled out a paper and placed it on the table.
“Before anyone decides Emily has no place in this house…”
He looked at Daniel.
“You should know the truth.”
Daniel frowned.
“What truth?”
Richard placed his hand on the document.
“This house.”
A pause.
“The one you have been calling yours.”
He looked around the dining room.
“The one your mother has been using to make people feel small.”
A pause.
“Does not belong to you.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“Richard, stop this.”
But he continued.
“This property was purchased before your marriage.”
Daniel stared.
“Dad…”
Richard looked at me.
“Emily was the only person in this room who didn’t know.”
My heart stopped.
“Know what?”
Richard handed me the document.
I looked down.
My hands were shaking.
The name on the ownership papers…
Was mine.
I looked up in disbelief.
“What?”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Victoria looked furious.
“You gave her the house?”
Richard turned toward his wife.
“No.”
A pause.
“I protected it.”
The room became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He wasn’t angry.
Not at first.
He was shocked.
Because he truly didn’t know.
Richard continued:
“Years ago, before Daniel married you, I created a legal agreement.”
He looked at me.
“I transferred ownership.”
“Why?”
I whispered.
Richard’s expression softened.
“Because I knew something Daniel didn’t.”
Everyone waited.
“Money reveals people.”
A pause.
“And I wanted to know who would love my son…”
He looked at Daniel.
“And who would only love what came with him.”
Victoria’s face turned red.
“You’re accusing me?”
Richard looked at her.
“I’m asking questions.”
A pause.
“Questions I should have asked years ago.”
Daniel shook his head.
“This is insane.”
Richard looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“What’s insane is watching your wife leave because your mother hurt her…”
He pointed at the ring.
“…and realizing you cared more about keeping peace than protecting her.”
Daniel looked down.
For the first time…
He had no excuse.
I stood there quietly.
My hand still burned.
My heart still hurt.
But something had changed.
For the first time that night…
Someone saw me.
Victoria suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
“You think this changes anything?”
Her voice became cold again.
“You think a piece of paper gives her power?”
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Because unlike you…”
He looked at me.
“She never needed power to treat people with kindness.”
Victoria’s expression darkened.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Are you really going to let this happen?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
She stepped closer.
“Your father is choosing her over his own family.”
Richard corrected her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m choosing the person who was treated like family.”
The words hit everyone.
Then Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?”
I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Because the message on his phone had appeared.
A single sentence.
“Ask your father why he never told Emily the real reason she owns this house.”
Daniel slowly looked up.
Richard’s face changed.
Because whoever sent that message…
Knew a secret even he was trying to hide.
May you like
And the truth about the house…
Was only the beginning.
