Chapter 9 - The Vault Beneath The HouseThe screen went black.

For a few seconds…
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what Bianca had just done.
She wasn’t running anymore.
She wasn’t hiding.
She was racing us.
To the truth.
Richard immediately grabbed his phone.
“Security team, get to the basement now.”
No response.
He tried again.
Nothing.
His expression changed.
“The cameras are down.”
Thomas looked toward the floor.
“She planned this.”
I stared at the empty screen.
Bianca had been inside the house.
The same house where she once sat at our Christmas dinner.
The same house where she smiled while pretending to be innocent.
She had been waiting.
Watching.
Preparing.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily, stay upstairs.”
I looked at him.
For a moment, I remembered the man who sat silently while his mother hurt me.
The man who chose comfort over me.
But I also saw something different.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
“No.”
My voice was firm.
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m going.”
Richard immediately shook his head.
“It’s dangerous.”
I looked at him.
“My entire life has been controlled by people telling me what I can and cannot know.”
A pause.
“I’m done being protected from my own truth.”
Thomas nodded.
“She’s right.”
Richard looked at him.
“She could get hurt.”
Thomas answered:
“She already was.”
The room became silent.
Because he was right.
I had spent years being hurt by lies.
The truth couldn’t hurt more than that.
We headed toward the basement.
Richard.
Daniel.
Thomas.
And me.
Victoria stayed behind.
But before I entered the hallway…
She grabbed my arm.
“Emily.”
I turned.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“If you find what’s inside…”
A pause.
“Don’t believe everything you see.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
She whispered:
“Because Bianca has a way of making the truth look like a lie.”
Then she let go.
The basement door was locked.
Richard entered the code.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Thomas looked at the keypad.
“She changed it.”
Daniel looked frustrated.
“Then how do we get in?”
I don’t know why…
But suddenly…
I remembered something.
The house.
My mother’s diary.
The photograph.
The message.
The house knows.
I looked at the wall beside the door.
There was an old painting hanging there.
A painting of this house.
But something was strange.
The painting showed a small tree beside the basement window.
A tree that no longer existed.
I touched the frame.
And felt something.
A small metal piece.
I pressed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Everyone froze.
Inside was an old key.
My hands trembled.
Because I knew immediately.
It was the same key Bianca showed on the camera.
Except…
There was another key attached.
With my name engraved on it.
EMILY.
Thomas whispered:
“Your parents left this for you.”
I stared at the key.
All my life…
I thought I had nothing from them.
But they had been leaving me a path.
A path back to the truth.
I inserted the key.
The basement door unlocked.
Slowly…
The door opened.
Cold air rushed out.
The room below was not a normal basement.
It was a hidden chamber.
Shelves covered every wall.
Documents.
Photographs.
Boxes.
Evidence.
Everything hidden for years.
Richard stepped inside.
“My God.”
Thomas moved toward a table.
“There.”
A single folder sat in the center.
With one name written on it.
EMILY CARTER.
My heart stopped.
I walked toward it.
Nobody stopped me.
Because everyone knew…
This was my truth.
I opened the folder.
Inside was my original birth certificate.
Not the one I had always known.
The real one.
I read the information.
My hands started shaking.
Because there was a difference.
My father’s name.
The name I had grown up believing.
Was not there.
Instead…
A different name appeared.
A name I had never seen before.
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“What does it say?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because my entire identity had just changed.
Thomas read it.
His face went pale.
“No…”
Richard looked.
And his expression collapsed.
“What?”
I whispered.
Richard slowly stepped back.
“Emily…”
I looked at him.
“Tell me.”
He swallowed.
“Your biological father…”
A pause.
“He was the owner of this house before me.”
I froze.
“What?”
Thomas looked at the documents.
“Your father was the reason this house was targeted.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why hide her identity?”
Richard answered:
“Because if people knew who Emily was…”
A pause.
“They would have killed her.”
The room went silent.
My entire life…
Was built on a lie meant to keep me alive.
Then we heard a sound.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
Bianca stood at the entrance of the vault.
Holding a gun.
Smiling.
“Beautiful.”
Her eyes moved toward me.
“You finally found out who you really are.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Bianca.”
She ignored him.
She looked only at me.
“Do you know what’s funny, Emily?”
I didn’t answer.
She smiled.
“You spent your entire life thinking you were nobody.”
A pause.
“But you were the most important person in this house.”
My hands tightened.
“Why?”
Bianca looked at the documents.
“Because your father didn’t just leave you a house.”
She stepped closer.
“He left you control over everything.”
Daniel froze.
Thomas looked shocked.
Bianca continued:
“The company.”
“The assets.”
“The evidence.”
“All of it.”
She smiled.
“And I spent years trying to find you.”
I stared at her.
“You married Daniel to get close to me.”
Bianca laughed softly.
“Exactly.”
The truth finally came out.
The marriage.
The family.
The Christmas dinner.
Everything.
It was all part of her plan.
Then Bianca raised the folder.
“But there is one thing you don’t know.”
She looked at me.
“The documents in this vault…”
A pause.
“Are not the original ones.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Bianca smiled.
“Your mother changed them.”
She pointed toward me.
“And she hid the real truth somewhere else.”
A silence followed.
Then Bianca whispered:
“Your mother didn’t trust this house.”
A pause.
“She trusted someone.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
Bianca looked toward the basement entrance.
Everyone followed her gaze.
A figure stood there.
Someone we thought had been helping us.
Someone who knew every secret.
Someone who had protected me.
Bianca smiled.
“Ask Thomas.”
The room froze.
Because Thomas slowly lowered his eyes.
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked guilty.
