Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden In The HouseThe message on Daniel’s phone changed the atmosphere instantly.

Nobody was thinking about Christmas anymore.
Not the decorations.
Not the dinner.
Not the argument.
Everyone was focused on one sentence.
“Ask your father why he never told Emily the real reason she owns this house.”
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
His eyes moved toward Richard.
“Dad.”
Richard didn’t answer.
And that silence was enough.
Because for the first time…
Daniel looked uncertain about his own father.
“What does that mean?”
Richard remained calm.
“It means there are things you don’t know.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“You transferred a house to Emily.”
A pause.
“You hid it from me.”
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer shocked everyone.
“Why?”
Daniel asked.
Richard looked at me.
“Because if I told you…”
A pause.
“I would never know the truth.”
I frowned.
“The truth about what?”
Richard looked at me.
“About your marriage.”
The words made my heart tighten.
“My marriage?”
Richard nodded.
“When you first came into this family, Emily, everyone had an opinion about you.”
He glanced at Victoria.
“Some people judged you before they even knew you.”
Victoria crossed her arms.
“She was never one of us.”
Richard looked at her.
“And that was the problem.”
Nobody spoke.
He continued:
“I watched you for years.”
I was surprised.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I watched how you treated people when nobody important was watching.”
His voice softened.
“You were kind to the staff.”
“You helped my wife when she was sick.”
“You never complained when this family ignored your efforts.”
My eyes became wet.
Because those were things nobody noticed.
Nobody except him.
Richard continued:
“I also watched my son.”
Daniel looked away.
“I watched him allow his mother to disrespect you.”
Silence.
“And I waited.”
“Waited for what?”
I asked.
Richard answered:
“To see if Daniel would choose you.”
My husband’s face changed.
“And if he didn’t?”
Richard looked at him.
“Then I would know exactly what kind of man my son had become.”
The words hurt Daniel.
I could see it.
But they were true.
Before anyone could say more…
A loud noise came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A glass vase had fallen.
The family’s youngest daughter, Lily, stood there holding her phone.
She looked terrified.
“What are you doing here?”
Victoria asked.
Lily looked at her mother.
Then at Richard.
“I heard everything.”
Victoria’s face changed.
“You were listening?”
Lily swallowed.
“I was looking for my charger.”
She looked at me.
“Emily…”
Her voice became quiet.
“I’m sorry.”
I was confused.
“Why are you apologizing?”
Lily looked down.
“Because I knew.”
The room froze.
“Knew what?”
She looked at Victoria.
“I knew Mom treated you badly.”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“Lily.”
But Lily continued.
“I saw it.”
A pause.
“I saw what she did when Dad wasn’t home.”
Daniel immediately looked up.
“What?”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She told me never to say anything.”
The room became silent.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Don’t make up stories.”
But Lily shook her head.
“I’m not.”
She unlocked her phone.
“I recorded it.”
Everyone froze.
She pressed a button.
A video played.
At first…
Only voices.
Victoria’s voice.
“Emily needs to remember she is lucky to be here.”
Then another voice.
Lily.
Younger.
Scared.
“Mom, she didn’t do anything.”
Victoria answered:
“People like her need to know their place.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked devastated.
He looked at his mother.
“Is this true?”
Victoria didn’t answer.
Because she couldn’t.
Richard closed his eyes.
For years, he suspected.
Now he had proof.
I looked at Daniel.
Waiting.
Not for an apology.
Not anymore.
I wanted to see if he finally understood.
He walked toward me.
“Emily…”
I stepped back.
He stopped.
Because he knew he didn’t deserve to come closer.
“I’m sorry.”
The words were quiet.
But they came too late.
I looked at him.
“Sorry for what?”
He lowered his eyes.
“For believing her.”
A pause.
“For letting you stand alone.”
My heart hurt.
Because part of me wanted those words months ago.
Years ago.
But tonight…
After everything…
They couldn’t erase the damage.
Then Richard suddenly looked at the front door.
His expression changed.
“Everyone stay here.”
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“Why?”
I asked.
Richard walked toward the entrance.
“Because someone has been inside this house.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Richard pointed toward the floor.
A muddy footprint.
Right beside the door.
And next to it…
A small envelope.
No name.
No address.
Only three words written on the front:
“The house knows.”
Richard opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Everyone gathered around.
The picture showed this house.
But not tonight.
Years ago.
Before Daniel and I married.
Before I ever entered this family.
And standing in front of the house…
Was me.
But that was impossible.
Because the date on the photograph was from ten years ago.
My face went pale.
“I wasn’t there.”
Richard stared at the picture.
Then he whispered:
“Someone wanted you to believe you were.”
The room fell silent.
Because suddenly…
The house wasn’t just a property.
It was hiding a secret.
A secret connected to me.
May you like
And someone had waited years…
For the perfect moment to reveal it.
